About this deal

Of all the things I can’t stand about my big brother, being called a child is number forty-seven. Not that I have a list. In chapter one of book 4 Luke mentions a cousin in Birmingham. This cousin is the time-traveler in book 5. Mrs Dunham: I know we promised never to speak of this again but under the circumstances I have no option. I hope you can forgive me. Steve’s death changed his younger brother’s life in all sorts of ways. When it happened, Glyn was working at Pinewood Studios as a costume designer on the latest Star Wars movie. It was work he loved but it also involved long, stressful hours and it had been nagging away at him that what he really wanted to do with his life, ever since he was a teenager, was paint. This family tragedy gave him the push to pursue his dreams. I Googled myself and it said: ‘Glyn Dillon, the less talented brother of Steve.’ That burned a little but it was true I don't think I've ever laughed so much while reading a middle grade book because it's so easy to relate to these characters. And of course I'm many, many light years away from the reading demographic it's aimed at. I'll be looking out for more from this author in future and I'll be recommending this one, a lot.

When the villains of the piece do show themselves, it's just brilliant in its reasoning and plot. I loved the storyline, so perfect for readers today, and they'll get the joke. This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Dark Flutter's powers only work on relatively small critters, not larger animals like lions and tigers. Despite Luke initially passing them off as useless, this ability actually proves very handy frequently throughout the series, as the animals are always available, Dark Flutter can use pigeons and rats as scouts and spies, squirrels as communicators and birds to help her fly, and supervillains find it more difficult to directly combat them. Serge suggesting that S.C.A.R.F write their adventures during assembly in book 5. That ends up being exactly what Luke does.

In the third book, Stellar has a conversation with Zorbon's spaceship, with most of the Techno Babble translated this way. Luke also counts, holding pretty well on his own without superpowers. The final book suggests it was for this reason that Zorbon didn't give any to him. So far any lady reading this (unless an avid fan of superheroes) has switched off the moment superheroes are mentioned. Clever writing from David Solomon has created a novel that clinches hold of all readers. This is due to, the family connection and love for one another throughout the story and a very intuitive girl named Lara. Several lines in Chapter 29 of My Gym Teacher is an Alien Overlord hint at the plots of the next few books. Luke thinks of the similarities between himself and Christopher Talbot: "We shared a brain. Not a giant-brain-in-a-jar-with-electrodes sense." In Book 4 he does actually encounter a brain-in-a-jar. Later when he and Serge make up: "I couldn't imagine a universe in which Serge and I weren't best friends." In the alternate universe of book 3 he and Serge aren't friends. I Should Write a Book About This: Luke records all of his adventures on notepaper. He gives these to Arthur Veesat, an author, who then writes in-universe the My Brother is a Superhero series.

My brother’s hostility toward me comes out in many ways. For example, the time Dad took us into the meadow for batting practice. I hit some powerful line drives, feeling pretty good about myself. Dad offered not a word of praise. Then D** gets up, belts one. Dad’s like, “Wow, son!” (I don’t get a “Wow, son!”) D** says, “Oops!” Then has to go retrieve the ball from the next galaxy.TARGET AUDIENCE: Cleareyed truth-seekers who’ve had it up to here with Epic Man’s phony, selfless, All-American hero myth. It’s also a timely wake-up for those who drank the Kool-Aid. So, everybody. OVERVIEW: Epic Man, as the public has never seen him, as only his brother knows him, in a warts-and-all memoir. Heavy on the warts. Vacation Episode: Book 4 involves Luke, Zach, their family and friends taking a trip to Great Minds resort.

Animate Inanimate Object: Servatron, main villain of My Cousin Is A Time Traveler and Luke's toaster. Technically he's an AI from the future, but for all intents and purposes he counts as one of these. One day, Mom says, “Conway, have you been smoking weed again in the attic?” “Thanks a lot, D**,” I say. “Using your heightened sense of smell to squeal?” “I had nothing to do with it,” he says. Mom says, “You don’t need special powers to smell reefer, Conway. The house reeks. You have a substance problem.” “Oh, I have a substance problem? It’s ‘my’ problem, is that it?” “Yes,” she says. “Well, could you blame me if I did?” I say. “I mean, I was once the Big Cheese around here, till Wonder Boy showed up. Now it’s like I don’t exist. He’s not even naturalized!” D** gets real earnest, pretends to care: “Conway’s been under a lot of school pressure, Mom. I’ll talk to him.” “Thank you, son,” she says. “Son?” I say, “I’m your son! Me!” I turn to D**: “And why do you call her Mom? Your mom is a dead Martian. Maybe I’ll do some squealing too and call ICE!” Christopher Talbot (and his relationship with Luke) is one of the best parts of this book. I also really liked Cara, surprisingly, and the clever way that the Mattias issue is resolved.Vagueness Is Coming: As Luke notes, Zorbon tends to show up once per book and deliver a vague prophecy before leaving. At first I thought about doing a comic [about Steve’s death], but the feelings felt too big for that medium,” he says. “I needed to do something different, more physical, standing up, climbing a ladder.” SYNOPSIS: Ollie and Henrietta Wilson (my parents), whose smart, trusting, biological son evidently wasn’t good enough for them, find and adopt an alien baby. The author traces the child’s growth from his arrival on our planet to his current persona as Epic Man, the self-involved superhero oblivious to his brother’s pain. The universal lesson here is that when parents impulsively adopt a kid from outer space, it can negatively impact their firstborn. Like Brother and Sister: Luke is relieved to find that Lara only thinks of him in this way in Book 2. It ends up being Serge who she gets together with in the end, but they separate by Book 5.

Waterstone's Children's Book Prize winner and perfect for fans of David Baddiel and David Walliams , this brilliantly funny middle grade series is the perfect read for children that love to laugh ages 8+! I Just Want to Be Special: Luke is understandably jealous about not getting superpowers. Christopher Talbot, too, to a much nastier extent. Fake Relationship: In book 1 Luke pretends to be dating Lara to his family to excuse them spending a lot of time together while she tries to uncover Star Lad's secret identity. Really Luke is trying to make sure she doesn't find out it's Zach.Hollywood Magnetism: Servatron uses this to turn a bunch of smart appliances into a mechanical body for himself after ending up in Luke's toaster. They name the baby D***** W*****. D** for short. D** the Man. (The author respects the current embargo on exposing Epic Man’s secret identity as it could endanger the lives of his aging parents in Middleton, Nebraska. On the other hand, might this reveal increase sales of the book? Open to your thoughts.) Due to his home planet’s heavy-duty gravitational field as compared to ours, young D** possesses “epic” abilities on Earth. What a happy surprise for the author’s dumbass parents. They laugh and clap as their new toddler flits around the farm at faster than the speed of sound, lifting tractors and shit. Conway, their actual son — a born and bred earthling, by the way — is just learning to balance a two-wheeler and could use some support and encouragement. No matter, Mom and Dad ghost him. His pre-K finger-paintings, once a mainstay of the refrigerator door, no longer rate. His pipe cleaner puppets? Zip. What is the author, chopped liver? Foreshadowing: In the second book Luke sees a cape flapping behind his reflection in the videogame console. Later in the alien's teleporter he sees a vision of himself as a superhero. This isn't a vision but actually an alternate version of himself who received superpowers instead of Zach, who makes a physical appearance at the end of the book and who drives the plot of My Evil Twin is a Supervillain. Turned Against Their Masters: Servatron, the main villain of My Cousin Is A Time Traveler, is an AI from a future where smart appliances eventually rebelled.
