About this deal

Aerosol varnishes are also a good choice if your work has a fragile surface that could be damaged by applying varnish with a brush. Boat varnish for exterior use, aka. “spar varnish” — aptly named because it was designed and envisioned as a flexible protective coating to protect a yacht’s wooden spar in the harsh (outdoor) marine environment — both protects and beautifies a vessel’s wood parts. Polyurethanes are available as both one-pot and two-pot products, the latter giving a harder coating and faster cure, which allows multiple coats to be applied in one day.

Winsor & Newton’s Dammar is the traditional ‘5lb cut’, if you want to use it with mediums (we do not recommend this, but millions of artists do it). Dammar gives a very high gloss. As it is a strong varnish, we recommend using Distilled Turpentine , our strongest solvent, when it needs to be removed. Make sure you allow each coat of finish to dry fully before applying subsequent coats. Again, it’s not necessary to sand between each coat.Choosing a product and methodology to apply marine varnish to achieve such results is not as simple as it would seem at first glance however, and this guide aims to make the whole process easier for novice and seasoned boat-owners alike. This water-based product will also not yellow over time, making it an excellent way to preserve a high-gloss finish. In recent years, Total Boat has become very popular offering products comparable—and sometimes superior—to the “big three” of Interlux, Petit, and Epifanes, at a fraction of the cost and their “Lust High Gloss Marine Varnish” is no exception. This one-part formulation uses linseed oil and a modified polyurethane base. After sanding, ensure you inspect the entire surface by shining a light on them to see if any rough areas remain. The more you sand, the better the results will be. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using every tool Sanding, filling, and finishing your wood will level and smoothen it. However, to get that professional-grade, mirror-like finish, you must polish the finished wood surface.

Remove any existing varnish or finish with a suitable paint and varnish remover / stripper. Sand the wood to remove any surface imperfections, then use a damp cloth to remove any debris and let the wood dry Always switch to hand sanding to cover areas that your power sander cannot reach instead of skipping those areas altogether. You will likely work with open-grained wood varieties like walnut, oak, and mahogany. If that is the case, ensure you fill the pores before applying the finish. This may not have a silky smooth finish initially, but don’t worry. Even if it’s a few weeks before you’re able to do a proper fix you know there won’t be any further degradation. Top boat varnish tip The quality of your brush will affect your finish and its durability. If you choose to varnish, consider applying it with a high-quality natural bristled brush instead of a synthetic one.Choose a day when the weather isn’t too humid. Varnish will dry slower in humid or cold conditions, and there’s more chance of dust and dirt settling on your project before it’s fully dry, which means you’ll have an imperfect finish. If working indoors, use the heating to get the room temperature somewhere between 20 and 25°C. If the room is too hot, the varnish will dry too fast and messy bubbles might form Even if you opt to use a power buffer, you can still finish it by hand buffing using a cotton buffing cloth and a lubricant such as rubbing oil. Can you get a Mirror Finish with Spray Paint? If you’ve worked in an impasto style, or with paint that has a rough texture, a spray will help you get an even coating of varnish and avoid the risk of creating bubbles or pools of varnish by applying it with a brush. Use long, even strokes, covering the surface top to bottom while moving from one side to the other - don't go over bits you have missed but leave to dry and then re-varnish area While applying, look for surface bubbles and even them out immediately With an alkyd base, 47% of tung oil solids, and UV inhibitors to boot, this product is a well-balanced one-part product that is suitable for a variety of uses. This product can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed.
