His reflections as an adult coupled with the view from the perspective of his child self really creates a full picture and overall I thought he did a great job on a book that must have been very difficult to write! So, sentimentalism isn't bad. In fact, the main reason we read stories is to feel sentimental, to let our feelings take over. Describing a male character crying can add depth and help break stereotypes, while describing a female character choosing not to cry can show strength and resilience. A reserved character might curl up, hugging their knees while a more expressive one might throw their hands in the air in despair. Charles Darwin once declared emotional tears “purposeless,” but since then we have learned that tears facilitate social bonding and promote helpful behavior.This is not the type of book that you read in hopes of enjoying the story or the author's writing. That is why I decided to choose a rating in the middle and go with 3 stars. It is beyond heartbreaking to come to the realization that there are more people out there that do this to innocent children than most of us ever imagined. I admire the courage that I'm sure it must have taken for the author to write this story and his ability to overcome such horrifying circumstances.
