About this deal

These paints can be mixed with regular paint to create interesting textures such as mud, sand, stone, or even snow. To apply Astrogranite or any other Citadel Technical Paint, I first prime my model’s base (or whatever surface I want to use this technical paint). Whether you want to depict a muddy battlefield, a farmyard, or a rustic countryside, Stirland Mud can help bring your miniature to life. The crackle texture paints took a bit of damage, but I can see no marks or flake from these grit ones.

The plastic tool will flex when you apply pressure which also makes it easier to flatten bumps in the paste and create a smooth, even surface. For example, when used on a miniature’s base, Astrogranite can create the impression of a weathered city street or a rocky mountain terrain. Sanded tile grout is an affordable (and somewhat messy) alternative to hobby branded texture mediums, like Citadel Texture Paints. Our fantasy figure range consists of Goblins, Dwarves, bits, bobs and things that go bump in the night. The bases I used were primed white for another project, so I just did a good black coat on the top of them before applying the Agrellan Earth.

If you are looking to do an even surface that can be somewhat tricky, but I think the point of the texture is to add depth so an even finish is not something you should be aiming at anyway.

Citadel Technical Texture paints are a special brand of paint that is very unlike the normal acrylic paint. When first I had it on the base it was manageable to move it around – but also a bit tricky at times. So Astrogranite Debris is the same colour as Astrogranite, Armeggadon Dunes is paired with Armageddon dust and Stirland Battlemire is the same colour as Stirland Mud (more on those other paints in the next section).

In this article, I go through all Citadel Technical Paints that I classify as the “gw texture paints”. The snow effect sticks on surprisingly quickly and was very easy to apply and just behaves like you would think it should behave. You can paint it with a single color, or you can layer different colors and even paints like Citadel Contrast Paints over top of the Astrogranite texture for more dynamic effects. This means the texture paint will now be in a clear pot (24 ml) and it will say “Technical” instead of “Texture” on the pot. It replaces the earlier snow pigment GW made and is my opinion very good compared to what GW made earlier.
