Some will accept these occasional flaws as a fair trade for what is otherwise excellent processing. For others, those flaws will be too distracting and, if so, the new Pure Cinema motion setting could be for you. This results in slightly smoother and sharper motion than is produced by simply turning the processing off entirely (the only option on last year’s sets) with none of the shimmer you get from the more aggressive processing options. It's still not perfect, though, and the long and the short of it is that some rivals, particularly Sony and Panasonic, still offer better overall motion processing. Sound is handled by two 10w downward firing speakers, which go loud enough, and there’s plenty of clarity to voices too. Bass is on the soft side though, and it doesn’t have the detail or dynamics to hold its own next to a soundbar. Dolby Atmos sound is built in but you won’t really hear its benefits from the built in speakers. If you can, an upgrade to a soundbar will be well worth it.

If it’s out-of-the-box performance you’re after, the OLED807 may not be the TV for you, but if you’re prepared to put the hard yards in – especially when motion-control and noise-reduction are concerned – then the rewards can be significant. Picture quality Philips hasn’t always been the best in this area, compared with the competition, but it’s starting to come close more recently. As with all of the OLED+ sets, the 937 comes with a Bowers & Wilkins sound system attached to the bottom of the set, and also utilises LG's brighter OLED EX panel that we really liked in the OLED+ 907.Unleashed on PS5 and Xbox Series X games as well as a wide range of video sources, the 55OLED806 proves to be a truly outstanding performer. Philips is renowned for its video processing and the new 3rd Generation P5 chip is onboard the 854. Upscaling is good with 576i SD broadcast looking as good as you can expect for such a low resolution on a 4K panel. HD Blu-ray and streaming looks nice and sharp with good line definition and no obvious signs of edge ringing within the content. We didn’t notice any artefacts with upscaled images in the accurate modes, even with test patterns. Obviously, with the P5 chip, you have lots of image manipulation options including extra sharpening and edge enhancement settings if you really want to go to town with these settings, but when set to off we didn’t see anything being applied that shouldn’t be there. Philips (like almost every TV brand, to be fair) understands what we consumers want from the design of their nice new television: screen, and plenty of it. So the OLED807 features four winningly narrow bezels, the brevity of which are only emphasised by the hefty, shiny T-bar stand the screen rests on. There’s a good amount of swivel available from the stand, too, so little changes of orientation no longer require lifting the whole device up. For those not already in the know, Ambilight is a Philips technology that extends the onscreen action onto the wall around the TV in the form of coloured light. Not only does it look fabulous, it also increases perceived contrast, makes the screen seem bigger than it really is, and draws the eye more effectively into the action. We love it.
