About this deal

If you’ve got a large garden with lots of big stuff to dispose of, it’s probably the best garden shredder for heavy duty jobs at home – it’s easy to be awestruck by its power.

As soon as you open the box and assemble the shredder, you can see that it has been made with simplicity in mind.On other quiet shredders, once the troughs have filled with compacted waste the teeth can no longer dig in and cut. Granted, the fully-leafed beech branches I tested it with remained in one mangled piece as opposed to being completely cut all the way through, but that didn’t bother me because I wasn’t considering using the mulched results as garden fertiliser. You will also need to snip off stiff twigs and large stubby bits or the branch simply won’t fit through the hopper’s opening slot. Impact shredders use sharp, fast-spinning blades to cut into garden waste and can process a wider variety of materials, including most hard wood branches and fresh, moist cuttings and leaves. It’s not recommended to stay exposed to that sound for a long time, especially as it gets louder when shredding wood, so we recommend using with ear protection.

They're simple to build, and light and easy to move around, with steel blades that finely shred material that's perfect for mulching. Plus, remember that an electric shredder which has a large maximum cutting diameter may not be as effective at shredding greener plants. In fact, we like this garden shredder so much that it almost tipped our long term champion – the Bosch AXT25TC of its top spot. The big 55 litre bin holds loads of chippings, and, thanks to the simple three-button control, it’s a piece of cake to use. However, bear in mind that we’re talking about a high-end, durable machine that’ll work relentlessly for ages. But, if space is at a premium and you just want something to chop up your leafy and green material, I’d save the money and go for something smaller and less full on. For users with heavy-duty shredding requirements, factors like the motor power, blade RPM and shredding rate will play greater importance. Instead of spending ages snipping all the twigs and branches to a manageable size for disposal in the green waste bin or at your local council dump, a good garden shredder will do the job in a fraction of the time and reduce all foliage to a much more manageable size, which you can then either put on the compost heap or in the council bin. Although this rotary shredder needs more assembly than an impact shredder it has clear instructions that make it easy to put together. Fuelled by her quest for self-sufficiency, she’s now putting that information to good use on her own rural farm.

It’s easier than using a lot of different garden tools, and it’s definitely better than having to deal with a manual compost shredder. Most users only know impact shredders are much noisier than their roller counterparts, but they’re not aware of the major differences. Whizzing round at 4,500 rpm, the blades make short work of thin branches and almost anything else you can fit in.In fact, there are spare parts for almost every part of this machine – and every other Cobra product. It eventually swallowed the lot but closer inspection of the huge 67-litre collection bin revealed that it had simply crushed rather than cut the branches, which meant I wasn’t able to spread the remnants over the flowerbeds.
