I have watched this engaging series as it has progressed over the years; and the characters have aged and developed within it. A body is discovered and the victim's injuries bear a striking similarity to a string of other murders over the previous few months, suggesting a serial killer is on the loose. When she learns that her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) has been visiting him in prison, she is furious, especially when she realises her sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) has been helping him.

In the third series, Catherine is on the verge of retirement when the discovery of a murder victim leads her back to a still incarcerated Tommy Lee Royce. In the summer of 2016, series one of Happy Valley was released on Netflix in the UK and is currently repeated on the channel W. I feel slightly ashamed to admit it, but there was a time when I wasn’t impressed by Sarah Lancashire. Her prowess as police sergeant Catherine Cawood proved what a marvellous actor she is, and in the process, turned me into a dedicated fan.
