About this deal

George VI married Elizabeth (known as the Queen Mother) and the couple were very popular during the war years. It has been confirmed by the Royal Mint that the coin remains legal tender, having been remonetized with a value of 25 pence. One of only two crown types issued during the reign of George VI (the other was released in 1937 to mark his coronation), it is commonly referred to as the ‘Festival of Britain’ crown. Sadly coins minted there cannot be distinguished from those minted at the Royal Mint, then on Tower Hill. Commonly referred to as the ‘Festival of Britain crown’, it features Humphrey Paget’s portrait of the monarch on the obverse and Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design on the reverse.

George VI (1936-1952) George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death on 6 February 1952. Formed in the reign of Alfred the Great about the year 886, during the period 1279-1812 it was generally referred to as The Tower Mint as it was housed at the Tower of London. In 1947 the Royal Mint removed all Silver from our coinage and it was now to be struck in cupro-nickel. The coin is of a Crown denomination, which was five shillings (5'), one quarter of One Pound Sterling.

This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees.

We have always thought that some of the coins were actually struck in New York but we have been told that this is not the case and they were all struck in this country.
