About this deal

We often get asked about books to support the 'Awesome Earth' or 'Natural Disasters' topics for KS2 and we think we may have just found the perfect one. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. It’s important to understand how and why natural disasters happen, and what they leave behind – and, not least, how they affect some of the poorest people on the planet. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Most importantly of all Williams’ use of fun as a tool for learning makes this a valuable way of teaching by stealth.

But throughout history, starting with ancient Jericho, Rome and Sparta, cities have proved to be extraordinarily resilient: only one, Port Royal in the Caribbean, was abandoned after an earthquake. is one of those books that perfectly balances both the needs of the child, and the wants of the adult; it's fun, educational and equally entertaining to people big and small. A truly welcome and refreshing study that puts earthquake impact on history into a proper perspective" --Amos Nur, Emeritus Professor of Geophysics, Stanford University, California, and author of Apocalypse: Earthquakes, Archaeology, and the Wrath of God. Measures progress and setbacks in democratization in 27 countries from Central Europe to the Eurasian region of the Former Soviet Union. Yet, even in the 21st century, great earthquakes are still essentially 'acts of God', striking with much less warning than volcanoes, floods, hurricanes and even tornadoes and tsunamis. Each section covers the science principles – ie the physics and chemistry behind extreme events; the cultural aspects, for example, myths, stories, and ancient beliefs; and for all topics – fun and powerful examples of the ‘biggest and worst’. Each section explores what each phenomenon is, the causes and the related scientific and geographical facts. The fascination comes from the magnitude of events over history and the power that they have to destroy and devastate all that lies in their wake.

Informative, accessible illustrations by Sophie Williams make this so much more than your standard geography book. We look at why these things happen, what the impacts are and what to do if you have the misfortune to get caught in one! Clear, coherent explanations break down the science behind phenomena including hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, alongside fascinating facts about the biggest and the worst.

I remember feeling really happy with them and this made me feel confident that my illustration style was right for this book. SOPHIE: It was a definitely a team effort, I would receive a document of text for each section of the book and each important piece of information would be broken down into an illustration. SOPHIE: It was really important to me to make sure my illustrations conveyed the information efficiently but remained fun and engaging for children. Often illustrations would need to be edited, extra images would be needed and bits of text would need to be handwritten to make the book flow and for the text and illustrations to work together. The book is perfect for complete coverage of the content domain and curriculum objectives for LKS2 given the inclusion of myths, idioms and other information to support the core subject-matter. Earth Shattering Events is an eye-catching and brightly illustrated hardback nonfiction book for children aged 7-12.
