About this deal

As we’ve come to expect from ‘The Collection’, this season of stories come with a mammoth quota of extras, some dating from the DVD release of the stories, but many of them brand new.

This was the first in the range since Season 14 the previous May, after the COVID-19 pandemic slowed production of bonus features. I do really like Toby but it was definitely refreshing to have a new face and Frank Skinner was excellent, touching dedication to a Who legend and lots about him I never knew. So imagine if the brilliant people in charge of The Collection range went to the time and effort to tidy up these images. The Direct Route – Doctor Who directors Michael Briant, Graeme Harper and Tim Combe take an epic road trip to all the filming locations from Season 8 as they discuss directing the show in the early 1970s. We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our site, provide personalised content and advertising, analyse our traffic, and ensure you see more of what you love. The script is a little thin on the ground and, as I mentioned earlier, is essentially a remake of Spearhead from Space with added bells and whistles. Season 7 had adopted a more mature Quatermass-like style for its four serials but producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks, not hugely comfortable with the ‘Earth exile’ scenario imposed upon the series as it entered a new decade, began to tinker with the formula in an attempt to skew it back to a more inclusive family audience.

If you have all of the originals on DVD or have unreasonable confidence in the fact that you’ll always be able to watch then on BritBox, then you might not want to spend your money on something like this. Although it seems like an odd selection of viewers they offer such differing perspectives on what they see on screen. If you are so inclined then the full studio recording session is also available to watch at your leisure. I’d also like Katy to do behind the Sofa either 7 or 11 so that we can see our thoughts on some of Jon’s non Katy stories. This restoration technique caused some new artefacts, and slightly cropped visuals, so arguably the original DVD releases which used just the reverse standards converted NTSC VTs (and not the b/w film) could be considered preferable to some. In years gone by, The Mind of Evil was one of the more problematic serials in the Pertwee era, existing only as a black and white film print and a dodgy telerecording with a piss-poor colour signal.
