About this deal

I enjoyed Dedication immensely and especially appreciated translator Paula Taberland's Afterword with its summary of Patti Smith's career and especially of her published work, of which I was previously only familiar with the terrific memoir Just Kids (2010). Usually if I tear up under those circumstances, it has to do with a foul odor, or the knowledge that the week is far from over). I really, really wanted to like this book, especially after she started out with talking about her time in Paris, especially with her editors and her book about to launch.

In this open exploration of the written word, we travel through the South of France to Camus’s house, and visit the garden of the great publisher Gallimard where the ghosts of Mishima, Nabokov, and Genet mingle. This is my second book of Patti’s prose that I’ve read; I previously read Just Kids for the first time last year and thought that book tickled me in all the right sweet spots. A work of creative brilliance may seem like magic-its source a mystery, its impact unexpectedly stirring. In this short book on this subject she doesn’t disappoint, helping us see the way she draws on experience—and particularly her experience of art and literature—to develop her own writing.Não gosto muito da Patti Smith ficcionista; prefiro-a quando relata as suas deambulações pelo mundo real, enquanto fala de livros, e escritores, de música, de cinema. In 2005, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Smith the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, the highest honor given to an artist by the French Republic. It’s recognizable to readers for its mythic proportion, accessible to all kinds of people for its brevity and intensity—and yet, it’s still distinctly Patti Smith. It’s not that great or even that compelling a story, one of lost innocence, but I like how it gives evidence to her theory; The figure skater, images from an Estonian film, Weil, Modiano, Camus, a visit to a French cemetery, they’re all here in her story.

By turns allegorical, metaphysical, fictional and factual, Devotion shows rather than tells what it means to give a life to writing. Smith tracks down Simone Weil's grave in a lonely cemetery, hours from London, and winds through the nameless Paris streets of Patrick Modiano's novels. We take I-Phone pictures of new state signs from the car, we repeat the letters of the Mississippi River as we cross it. We get this very lyrical prose, one that is strikingly characteristic of a poet, that is like music on the page.

Patti’s writing is incredible, it’s just be warned that this isn’t the kind of memoir you might be expecting. Devotion, though a departure from her previous books, does not deviate from Smith’s remarkable gift. The right book can serve as a docent of sorts, setting a tone or even altering the course of a journey. Time and again, we hear that Patti Smith 'travels light'--which is interesting to me, in that yes, she packs in a minute, heads out to pay devotion to any number of cultural figures--in this section its Simone Weil, who merges with Modiano and that Estonian film. Patti Smith first presents an original and beautifully crafted tale of obsession--a young skater who lives for her art, a possessive collector who ruthlessly seeks his prize, a relationship forged of need both craven and exalted.
