About this deal

This lack of intimate interaction between mother and son caused Toad to experience a lonely childhood without love or happiness. Badger is one of Toad’s friends, or rather a friend of Toad’s father, who is harsh on Toad whenever he makes mistakes.

The theory is described clearly yet convincingly through the client/counsellor relationship with plentiful uses of metaphor, good humour, and irony that make us smile indulgently, not only at Toad but also at ourselves at times as we recognise some of our own frailties.Over the course of ten sessions, which correspond to chapters of the book, a very depressed Toad learns how to analyse his own feelings and develop his emotional intelligence using the language and ideas of transactional analysis.

These are the effects of Toad's family environment, and they are the source of his current depression. In this article, when we use the word “depression,” we are referring primarily to clinical depression, not to a depressive mood. For over 25 years Counselling for Toads has provided readers with a warm and engaging introduction to counselling, brought to life by Toad and his friends from Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. For example, if we plan to go hiking with our friends, and they tell us before we set out that they have to cancel, we may feel upset. Very useful for counsellors and counselling students wishing to grasp the basics of Transactional Analysis. I, for example, was able to re-evaluate some recent family trauma and see it in a more positive light.

The book offers a number of lifelong social rules that break down the way people think about social behavior. Just reading the book helped me identify some of the things going on in my life - that's without doing any actual work! His two professional books, Counselling Skills and The Psychoanalysis of Organizations, are both best-selling psychology textbooks in the UK, and this book, Counselling for Toads, is his most well-known and best-selling work on popular psychology. Friendly introduction to the ideas behind counselling, suitable for voluntary organizations, schools, social work departments, hospitals, etc. It followed well of the classic story and provided a great in sight into, what I think is often considered the least favourable character.Being a longtime fan of Kenneth Grahame's Wind In The Wind ( I visited his home in Edinburgh to see the plaque), I was at first irritated by how Grahame's characters had been "misappropriated" for this treatise on Transactional Analysis. Good introduction (though too short) to counseling process and transactional analysis used in therapy.
