About this deal

Coffee Logs burn long and slow under normal airflow conditions – more air will give a gentle flame and good heat. The supplier, which makes fuel from recycled coffee grounds, appointed KRE Corporate Recovery as administrator this month, having failed to secure new funding. We welcome the government’s move as a significant step in the right direction for reducing reliance on carbon-heavy fossil fuels and cutting emissions contributing to climate change.

The unique innovation of this product was that you could turn recycled coffee grounds into burnable briquettes. They’ve already helped thousands of UK households save money by reducing their wood fuel consumption. Each carbon neutral Coffee Log is made from the grounds of 25 cups of coffee and burns 20% hotter and longer than kiln-dried wood. The company also secured mentoring from Virgin StartUp and VOOM Professionals, facilitating invaluable industry insights and guidance. The regulations also bring in a new certification scheme (known as ‘Ready to Burn’) for manufactured solid fuels that are deemed ‘smokeless’. It is estimated that using coffee grounds as a fuel generates 80% fewer emissions than if they had gone to landfill.

There are indeed many other much cheaper online woodfuel eco log briquettes available but none more beautifully made and packaged.

We then threw the first coffee log on top of our Firebuilder, and within moments the log was burning nicely. e. smokeless fuels, which are primarily fossil-fuel based) must contain less than 2% sulphur and emit less than 5g of smoke per hour. Bio-Bean explained that stoves come pretested for compliance with a specific fuel, either generic wood or mineral fuel, such as smokeless ovals etc.

By tackling the waste the industry creates at its destination, we are helping deliver a cleaner tomorrow. At the world’s first coffee recycling factory in Cambridgeshire, bio-bean’s engineers turns these coffee grounds into amazing Coffee Logs.

This certification scheme sits alongside the already existing scheme for dried wood, which is also known as ‘Ready to Burn’. The little Hobbit has stepped up to the challenge, providing heat to a very large area, about twenty eight foot by twenty four foot with a high ceiling of about eighteen foot, keeping the room reasonably warm, warm enough for us not to use cardigans! Each carbon neutral Coffee Log is made from the grounds of 25 cups of coffee and contains about 20% more energy than wood meaning it burns hotter and for longer than wood. Set against the backdrop of 20,000 contest registrations, 750,000 votes, and an exhaustive 29-hour 'pitch-athon', Coffee Logs emerged as a beacon of sustainable innovation in the consumer space.

Making your own coffee logs can help use up your waste coffee grinds that would otherwise end up in the bin. We have a lovely cast iron tiled fireplace which I was desperate not to lose when we installed a small wood burning stove, but until I found the Hobbit on Google, everyone told me it would be impossible to keep the fire surround.

The final stage of the process is the beans that have just been roasted, these are then quickly cooled, de-stoned and packed in valved bags to lock in the freshness.
