About this deal

This book has all the stories behind the iconic tracks such as 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Babooshka,' as well as Bush's collaborations with artists as varied as Elton John, David Gilmour, Prince and the Trio Bulgarka. The way this biography is woven together from past interviews, chats with her nearest and dearest and the author’s interviews and run-ins with the illusive chanteuse is fantastic. One of the few positive stories amongst the global chaos of recent times has been the critical and commercial renaissance of Kate Bush thanks to Netflix's Stranger Things using 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)', and now this book has arrived with perfect timing. He regularly has the ace up his sleeve of always having a direct quote to hand, because he asked her about it at the time. Featuring details from the author's one-to-one conversations with Kate, as well as vignettes of her key songs, albums, videos and concerts, this artful, candid and often brutally funny portrait introduces the reader to the refreshingly real Kate Bush.

The Big Sky is a vibrant and comprehensive re-examination of Kate Bush and her many creative landmarks.

It's broadly chronological, with a neat framing device of the author's interview with her as she was putting the finishing touches to Aerial. The past few years I have been so into Lana Del Rey and Sufjan Stevens that you would think that they are on top of my musical mountain. Fascynują historie o poszukiwaniu dźwięków idealnych, odkrywaniu w otaczającym świecie elementów, które będą mogły wzbogacić utwory (tłuczenie szkła, ptasie trele). Bush’s infrequent interviews rarely reveal her thoughts about anything but music, as Doyle found when he spent four hours with her for a Mojo magazine feature in 2005, from which he quotes extensively. She thought it sounded like “a bag of cats”, but Lydon, who had just left the Sex Pistols, heard a fellow renegade.

En dat gebeurde op zo’n manier dat ik de albums opnieuw ging beluisteren, video’s ging bekijken die ik nog nooit had gezien ( Efteling special! Journalist Doyle ( Captain Fantastic) delves beyond Kate Bush’s recently revived 1985 hit “Running up That Hill” in this colorful career retrospective.Kate Bush w 50 odsłonach” Toma Doyle’a to portret artystki luźno nawiązujący do wywiadu autora, który przeprowadził z bohaterką w 2005 roku. I didn’t see any reference to photos or illustrations which may come later in the production timeline but the book would really benefit from them! Media has not always been kind to Kate Bush because of her propensity to avoid the spotlight and not seek fame the way many other artists do. The writing is simple, to the fact and does a great job in adding a little more colour into a person who’s work we all know, but who’s personal life is kept somewhat at a distance. Comprising fifty chapters or 'visions', Running Up That Hill is a multi-faceted biography of this famously elusive figure, viewing her life and work from fresh and illuminating angles.

It was one of those drop-everything-else-and-stare-open-mouthed-into-space-utterly-mesmerized moments. With an output of just ten studio albums over a career lasting more than three decades, she was recently introduced to a new generation through the use of her music on the TV series Stranger Things. Visions saves that one till last and thankfully the book gets back on track where Doyle is at his best, writing about the creation and influence of Bush’s music. For those thirsting to understand her this is perfect, getting into her music, personnel and instrumentation in a respectful, useful way.Music Connection : Author Tom Doyle wrote a piece about Kate Bush’s resurgence and the book is featured. This is not a deep dive into Kate Bush's life story or intrapsychic psychodynamics but a wonderful tribute and narrative of her career and musical life. The book doesn’t shy away from the criticism the album received either, but Doyle softens the blow by suggesting momentum is just around the corner, a blue centre light being ignited as Bush moves steadily and shiva-like towards her bona fida masterpiece. Tom Doyle also intertwines vivid reconstructions of transformative moments in her career and insights from the friends and collaborators closest to her, including her photographer brother John Carder Bush and fellow artists David Gilmour, John Lydon, and Youth. Doyle’s idea, though, was to create a join-the-dots outline of Bush by looking at 50 scattered slices of her career.
