I just got ahold of Mirroshades via Dano (see comment above), and “Solstice” was the first story I read.

Not only are the stories fantastic, but the anthology didn't have to rely on a nostalgia effect, like those that are being published now.

They’re semiotic phantoms, bits of deep cultural imagery that have split off and taken on a life of their own, like the Jules Verne airships that those old Kansas farmers were always seeing.
