Now back to the main topic, I’m sorry I went a bit off road here, as someone recommended I think I will study and finish the Genki series first and then move to the みんなの日本語 series, from what I’m being told みんなの日本語 is written entirely in Japanese so it might be better to study with it after first being used to Japanese grammar, at least that’s how I’m seeing it. And while they can be expensive, they’re worth the investment if you’re dedicated to learning Japanese. It's clear, gives example sentences in the grammar, uses words you may encounter when you're in the target audience of students or business people, and has these cute little drawings (sometimes silly) to illustrate the point, even when it's already clear. In any event I don’t think it’s going to make or break your studies, so I wouldn’t worry about having made the “right” or “wrong” choice.

But I’m curious how the levels compare… How do the Minna no Nihongo books compare level-wise to the Genki books?You get to learn Japanese in Japanese, and there’s more immersion, as opposed to Genki, which likes to communicate to you in English too much. Me iré a estudiar a Japón y me piden nivel antes de ir para saber en que clase meterme, me dicen el libro que utilizan para guiarnos en este caso es Genki 1 y 2, pero yo uso Minna no Nihongo y voy por la lección 12, por lo que no sé a que equivale con el que yo uso y por lo tanto no sé en cual meterme. At least, that’s what the beginning of the translation book recommends for proceeding through the text. And for learners without a CD player, an App is available to hear the audio content on smartphones or tablets. Tho I can't use the CD because I have nothing to play it, it's super easy to find the MP3 on the web.

The series is divided into two parts: Minna no Nihongo Shokyu (beginner) and Minna no Nihongo Chukyu (intermediate). And still nowadays It’s really hard, considering my teacher is not very good, so I would definitely recommend genki over this book.
