The East End, North London and Holborn streets that Margery Allingham elaborated on in her Campion novels are all here (probably). When I received it the brown paper at two corners was torn exposing the contents, Needless to say I was not impressed at all. I also now see why even today so very many commentators on interiors bemoan the demolishment, in 1924, of Devonshire House.How could it be when character and plot are slaves to the concept, when all we have is the frame of a single camera? The text is accompanied by three hundred and three pictures of London's lost architectural features, structures, and landscape. There are pictures of beautiful buildings that were destroyed in air raids or wilfully demolished because they can.
These were the days before people were concerned about conservation, and a great many remarkable buildings surviving from as far back as before the Great Fire have been lost.
It will take me ages to read because I cannot just flick through it, every page needs to be looked at thoroughly as there are so many interesting things to see in each and every photo. Images of such abject poverty are a stark reminder that while there is much that we might mourn the loss of in the way of historic buildings, the changes to London since these moments were captured have not all been for the worse. The best book in my library is definitely this book of old photos of London, so I am reproducing this review here by way of recommending it.
