Whilst it marked a year of exciting ginnovation (and the launch of our book, SIP), we also raised glasses to our vow never to change the Sipsmith London Dry Gin recipe, no matter how large the size of our demand. In 1726, he wrote a pamphlet on behalf of London's Company of Distillers entitled, 'A Brief Case of the Distillers, and the Distilling Trade in England, Showing how Far it is the Interest of England to Encourage the Said Trade'. The authors of the book – The Company of Distillers of London – had encrypted the recipe to ensure that only its members could recreate it. Although this is the first recorded use of the word it is of course likely to have been in colloquial use sometime earlier. As the 18th century progressed, Gin was blamed for thousands of deaths, from overconsumption to gin fuelled murders and even insanity. Eyebrows were raised two years ago upon the release of King William Gin - named in honour of William of Orange, a revered figure among protestants and some Rangers fans.

Whenever the weather turned, crowds would gather to explore the stalls and tents selling hot gin and gingerbread that popped up along the frozen River Thames, as enterprising Londoners looked to make a quick shilling out of what became known as the London Frost Fairs. The charity highlighted the importance of symbolism and how historical figures, imagery, colours and dates could be viewed in the context of identity, intolerance and religious prejudice in Scotland today. Distilled five times to give exceptional purity our distiller has developed this blood orange gin with our chosen recipe of botanicals which include coriander, angelica, lime, cassia and nutmeg. This simple gin drink was among the first created and consumed purely for pleasure and the anesthetic effect that clearly demarked the end of the workday and the beginning of the evening’s revelries. This replica gin was based on the original 1689 recipe of the spirit made by the Dutch King William III (AKA William of Orange) after he was proclaimed King of England, Ireland and Scotland that very year.In 1689, King William of Orange had moved into Hampton Court Palace and immediately enacted a series of laws to encourage gin distillation, this is a tribute to his critical part in the launch of gin. Incidentally, the Dutch term 'jenever' or 'jenever' was borrowed from Old French 'genevre' (modern French genièvre) meaning 'juniper tree', which in turn comes from the Latin word for the tree 'juniperus'. The recipe, which was amazingly uncovered in the British Library’s rare book section, lists the original ingredients but unfortunately, the quantities were concealed by code, which proved unbreakable. The poorest people began drinking more gin less responsibly, meanwhile, royalty and high society sipped tamely as more of a fashion statement than an emotional or psychological release. OUR NEW BLOOD ORANGE GIN FROM THE KING WILLIAM TEAM - Our new Blood Orange gin raises a glass to King William, the regal father of gin distillation in the U.

Distilled five times for "exceptional purity", the gin is made using carefully selected botanicals including orange peel, coriander, angelica, lime, cassia and nutmeg to create a "fresh, vibrant spirit" that is "bursting with plenty of orange citrus notes". The packaging had several features that prompted accusations that the product had been designed to provoke Catholics. It read: "Seems some people are upset and struggle to accept that King William of Orange is a legend.Passed in 1690, it heralded a gin revolution and the start of craft gin distilling that we know today. Anti-sectarianism charity, Nil by Mouth, told members the historical monarch was an important figure on both sides of the Irish Sea and closely associated with Protestantism. In the 1900s the gin palaces evolved into cocktail and dance venues as cocktails became very popular in the 1920s and 30’s. And the way he did that was by liberalising the distillation of gin in 1690 - which meant farmers grew more crops, which could be taxed, and so they raised more capital.

Belcondie previously released a King William Gin, and also owns trademarks for King William Rum and King William Whisky. It found it “unusual” to see the number presented to two decimal places, and considered it “intentional” to directly associate the number with a year. It was only a matter of time before the folks behind King William Gin, inspired by King William of Orange, created an actual orange gin!

Caffeine-packed Buckfast has been heavily criticised over the decades in Scotland for its links with antisocial behaviour. We’ve since had a lot of positive feedback on our gin from areas within Scotland and Northern Ireland and are fully expecting King William to making an appearance on plenty of other shores around the globe very soon! uk accepts no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products by manufacturers or other third parties.
