In 1987, John Huston directed a film adaptation of "The Dead", written for the screen by his son Tony and starring his daughter Anjelica as Mrs. The dog yelped running to them, reared up and pawed them, dropping on all fours, again reared up at them with mute bearish fawning. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.

They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany (a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination) and the theme of paralysis (Joyce felt Irish nationalism stagnated cultural progression, placing Dublin at the heart of a regressive movement). There is a common theme running throughout, of people trapped, either by circumstance or because of decisions they have made, and many of the stories focus on a moment in the central characters' lives when they become aware of their trap. A fat brown goose lay at one end of the table and at the other end, on a bed of creased paper strewn with sprigs of parsley, lay a great ham, stripped of its outer skin and peppered over with crust crumbs, a neat paper frill round its shin and beside this was a round of spiced beef. Hugh Leonard adapted six stories as Dublin One, which was staged at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, in 1963. The concluding story is The Dead, which the blurb on GR cites as “the best short story ever written.It doesn’t have a form of narrative closure, a convenient wrapping up of plot, after each wound we take in life. Who feel that if they want to achieve anything in life they have to leave this town behind, that in Dublin actually there is no life. And of course there are classes in this society, so that those of any class except the bottom can always compare themselves pridefully to those below them, should they care to. Joyce offered to pay the printing costs himself if the sheets were turned over to him and he was allowed to complete the job elsewhere and distribute the book, but, when he arrived at the printers, they refused to surrender the sheets and burned them the next day, though Joyce managed to save one copy, which he obtained "by ruse".
