About this deal

He concludes that the satisfaction derived from Babar is based on the knowledge that "while it is a very good thing to be an elephant, still, the life of an elephant is dangerous, wild, and painful. Surely the happy effect this has on the reader, and the elephants, is not the result of our (or their) having been propagandized to accept colonial hegemony.

I hope this review does not offend any of those who dearly love the character and I will have to read some reviews from those who really love the Babar books to see what I might be missing here. Babar made a nameless appearance in The New Traveller's Almanac (part of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series). The paper sides are printed with a design from de Brunhoff’s maquette and the box is fastened with grosgrain ribbon – again in Babar’s signature green. With the original illustrations from Jean de Brunhoff’s 1931 classic, this first Babar story has enchanted generations. One can forget, reading the critics, that the books are, first and last, meant to be funny, and that Babar is an elephant who talks and walks: the story is happening to creatures that children know do not ride elevators, wear suits, or build buildings.

An animal that attempts to become an astronaut or conduct an orchestra is inherently ridiculous and makes the ambition ridiculous as he pursues it. He gets them some clothes and tries to make them conform to the posh society but decides this is his chance to escape and dumps his girlfriend and heads back to the forest. They also remain one of the few enterprises begun by a father and continued by his son in more or less the same style. Following the death of the King of the Elephants, who had eaten a poisonous mushroom (the illustrations indicate that it is a fly agaric), a council of old elephants approach Babar, saying that as he has "lived among men and learnt much", he would be suitable to become the new King. There are now over 30,000 Babar publications in over 17 languages, and over 8 million books have been sold.Hatchibombotar cleans the streets, Olur repairs the automobiles, and, when they are all tired, Doulamor plays his cello to entertain them. His stories have followed the king of the elephants as he builds a city, founds a family and even meets Father Christmas. The volume also includes a loving and perceptive introduction by Maurice Sendak and a photo story by Laurent de Brunhoff in which photos from his family's album and studies from his father's and his own sketchbooks provide a fascinating personal view into the world of Babar.

The true condition of the animals—to be naked, on all fours, in the jungle—is made shameful to them, while to become an imitation human, dressed and upright, is to be given the right to rule. A neatly printed vintage Christmas 1982 gift inscription at the upper left corner of the half title page.

LE VOYAGE DE BABAR features the famous storyline of King Babar averting a war with the rhinos by painting the bottoms of his elephant brethren to look like wide-eyed monsters. Nestled with the sketches inside special pockets in a portfolio folder quarter-bound in cloth, it shows Babar develop from pencil drawing to fully-formed book character.
