About this deal

I love you for who you are deep in your soul, not for the colour of your eyes or the length of your legs or the size of your chequebook. The book's success has much to do with its beautifully modeled sentences, its wry humor, its unwavering deadpan respect for its reader's intelligence. He never disappoints and the titles of his books are usually clear and very indicative of what you're hoping a book will be.

In his words, “ I appreciated how novels could generate emotion, moving you, perhaps to tears, through characters with some of the quality and immediacy of real-life acquaintances. And it feels like the only option IS to kill yourself and be done with it and then think about how guilt-wrecked the other party will be for causing you to go to such measures. Alain de Botton has this uncanny ability to spit out everything that my brain is thinking in beautiful and candid writing minus any fluff. When Chloe and the protagonist (I suppose his name is Alain — we are never completely sure of that) first met in a chapter titled “ Romantic Fatalism”, De Botton wrote about our motivations in falling in love as a desire to invent a destiny so as to spare ourselves the anxiety that no one has written our story or assured our loves, that we are eager to locate inside another person a perfection that eludes within ourselves, and ultimately “ hope to maintain a precarious faith in our species. He is the founder of two social enterprises, the first promoting architecture, Living Architecture, which gets top architects to build holiday homes for rental by everyone.

There’s less of a chance to make a fool of yourself (or at least be aware of how foolish you sound) because you didn’t intend on furthering that relationship anyway. The book's success has much to do with its beautifully modelled sentences, its wry humour and its unwavering deadpan respect for its reader's intelligence . Then again, I wouldn’t say I have a lot of experience in this realm so I probably need to get a second opinion. Then I find reasons to hate that person and think about how they failed to understand me, this super spEciAl and diFfeReNT person. The inability to live in the present lies in the fear of leaving the sheltered position of anticipation or memory, and so of admitting that this is the only life that one is ever likely (heavenly intervention aside) to live.
