The site carries no advertising, and I rely on donations to help with running costs and to keep the site running for your entertainment and education. Standfast, as well as a number of other such heroic characters, including Beau Geste, Bulldog Drummond and James Bond.

Many of the episodes in this series gave the impression of having been awkwardly and hastily edited. One episode, A Point of Honour, was based on a story of the same name by Dornford Yates that appeared in his 1914 book The Brother of Daphne, although Yates was not credited. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Then the plot gets really convoluted with a murder and a kidnapping and Hannay under suspicion and all manner of conspiracies. The 13 fifty-minute episodes on the well presented four DVD boxed set are Season 1: episode 1: The Fellowship of the Black Stone [First shown 6 January 1988], 2: A Point of Honour, 3: Voyage into fear, 4: Death with Due Notice, 5: Act of riot, 6: The Hazard of the Die.

When Hannay saves the life of a desperate young lady, he little realises how quickly this act of bravery will bring him face-to-face with his arch-enemy Von Schwabing. He is wounded in the leg and neck in the Battle of Loos in September 1915, by which time he had reached the rank of major.

Unfortunately, the painstaking Edwardian period detail was undermined by childish writing and inane plots. I don’t believe any well brought up lady at that time would have risked her reputation so recklessly.By joining TV Guide, you agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy.

This release comprises both action-packed series, with guest appearances from Martin Clunes, Alex Kingston, Charles Gray, Oliver Cotton, Phyllis Logan, Iain Cuthbertson and Anthony Valentine. The sense that there is a sort of understanding among men of a certain class, even if they are rivals, is very well rendered and certainly reflects the fiction of the time. The 1973 BBC documentary Omnibus: The British Hero had Christopher Cazenove playing Hannay in a scene from Mr. I have heard rumours of a new version of '39 Steps' and would be interested to see who is cast as Hannay. I have just watched episode 4 of Series 2 - "The Good Samaritan" - which gives more than a nod to "The Lady Vanishes" and is excellent entertainment.
