I began this painting of a tree frog with pale, watery mixes of watercolour which were a match to the lightest tonal values within each colour. I used the same mix with a size 0 brush to apply to the dark green parts of the frog’s skin, most of which were as a second layer (the layer underneath being dry). The materials I use include acrylic paint, household paints, spray paint, glitter, screen printing, stencils, markers, mixed media collages of comic books, posters and found objects.

Most of these areas will need to be darkened later, but it’s still good to work with a pale mix at this stage, not least because it’s easy to use damp kitchen roll to lift paint off if you accidentally place colour in the wrong place. We only use industry-leading genuine archival HP VIVERA inks to achieve the most vivid and ultra-high-definition poster prints possible. I left gaps wherever there were lighter colours and overlapped my paint on the transitions between colours.This artwork is crafted in the United Kingdom with artist-grade canvas, professionally hand-stretched, and stapled over pine-wood bars in Gallery Wrap style; a method artists use to present artwork in galleries. I stippled the colour, leaving gaps wherever there were highlights and adding more Winsor Lemon for the yellower parts of the frog’s skin. I painted the purples I could see in the leg using Quinacridone Purple with a touch of Scarlet Lake. I used the size 000 brush and three mixes with a thick consistency: a dark blue of Quinacridone Purple, Payne’s Gray and Winsor Blue (Green Shade); a dark purple of Quinacridone Purple and Burnt Sienna; and a lighter blue of Cobalt Turquoise Light, Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and a touch of Payne’s Grey.
