The title is a portmanteau of the two performers' Zodiac signs: Aquarius (Big Boi) and Gemini(André 3000), which is indicative of the album's recurring theme of the differing personalities of the two members.

More ambitious and hook driven then their debut album, 2000's Stankonia is a trippy sort of technopsychedelic funk. However, the two innovative MCs break new ground with Aquemini, their third album, not to reclaim their reign of the dirty South, but to establish their mark in the universal scheme of hip-hop.The title track is a stoned-funk that opens with a mantra "Even the sun goes down, heroes eventually die/Horoscopes often lie and sometimes 'y'/Nothing is for sure, nothing is for certain, nothing lasts forever/But until they close the curtain, it's him and I, Aquemini". Aquemini is the third studio album by American hip hop duo OutKast, released on September 29, 1998 through LaFace Records. Listening to this record, all my usual gripes about music being dead or over in a morass of retroism are quelled; an album that looks backwards to move forward, or moves forward while looking back.

The commercial success of ATLiens allowed for more creative freedom for the group, which led to the members self-producing the majority of the tracks.
