As production processes become ever more controlled and automated, there’s not much room left for distinction or surprises. Like the 10-year-old Machrie Moor (I tried the following bottling WB204190 at the same time) a very independent and indispensable bottling in the Arran portfolio. Since 2019, all peated production of whisky on the island is being done by Arran sister distillery at Lagg. So popular, in fact, that the distillery on the eponymous island has made the decision to add it to its permanent range! Machrie Moor Cask Strength Whisky is a rich and powerful single malt that captures the rugged beauty of its island home.I wouldn’t spend hours dissecting the flavours and aromas, but I’d certainly pour it for friends who are not into whisky to familiarise them with the spirit. As with every whisky, Machrie Moor comes with the industry standard romanticized cliches which tie the whisky to the island’s ancient past and legends.
