About this deal

He was the first Showbiz Editor at Digital Spy and has written for publications including the Independent, the Telegraph, Attitude, Radio Times and Yahoo.

Still, I enjoyed the various twists and turns each character faced, and there was a satisfying ending. I don't tend to read this kind of genre much, unless it features queer characters and might be doing something interesting, so the writing style was also not quite for me, with some forced, cheesy dialogue, but I imagine some fans of the genre will probably enjoy that more. Born and raised in the island town of Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, Ryan is a NCTJ-qualified journalist. Despite the story being a little twee, I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it if you're looking for a comforting read that will tug at your heartstrings.I could easily see this story being made into Netflix show, it would help so many people going through the same thing, even if you’re the same age as Arthur or Teddy it doesn’t matter as it appeals to all the ages.

Until then, I suppose at least younger readers will (probably) enjoy the Teddys and Bens of the fictional world. No one in the family is prepared when 79-year-old Arthur Edwards drops a bombshell: he's gay, and after a lifetime in the closet, he's finally ready to come out. The story follows Arthur and Teddy over a year, as they endeavour to find their place in the world and possibly love.

Characters explain their feelings clearly, and there are enough supportive characters that the homophobia explored isn’t too traumatic.Ryan Love exemplifies how bravery and contentment are possible for everyone, but that we might just need to make the effort to find happiness for ourselves. She accuses him of making it up, of coming out to spite her personally, of attempting to take the spotlight away from his uncle’s engagement, anything but recognise that he’s being vulnerable to her and hoping, despite knowing how she reacted to her father’s coming out, that she might be kind to him. Similarly, with a lot going on in the plot and the need for everything to feel resolved due to the necessary happy ending of the genre, the ending is quite rushed and a lot of things suddenly happen with time jumps that don't quite feel fully realised.

I’ve got high hopes that we’ll see more stories like Arthur’s in future – late-in-life coming out is an underexplored area in queer literature, IMHO. This is a book firmly in the 'feel-good modern novel about someone finding themselves with a side of romance' genre, with the intergenerational element that many of these books have thrown in as well. Reading his acknowledgements just added that extra link to the story, the sadness he's experienced in life really reflect the story well. It’s gone as badly as Arthur Edwards expected: his son Patrick is confused, but his daughter Elizabeth is livid. This was a remarkable story, with a feel-good ending, but interlaced with the tensions associated with homophobia, small-town thinking and not conforming to what they all think are the norms. To access your ebook(s) after purchasing, you can download the free Glose app or read instantly on your browser by logging into Glose.
