About this deal

The decision space is limited enough that downtime doesn’t increase a ton, and also you can get robbed by any player at any time, so there’s still stuff happening even when it isn’t your turn. But then I heard my wife talking about how much fun the girls in our neighborhood had playing Cover Your Assets at girls camp last summer. For this part of the review I will focus on the standard game and then I will discuss what is different with the lower player counts later on.

The WIRED conversation illuminates how technology is changing every aspect of our lives—from culture to business, science to design. Either way, I’ve had fun with Cover Your Assets, and if you’re looking for a quick family game, you enjoy acquiring stolen wealth, or you’re just here for some take-that in a fun setting, this one might be for you!

You can only ever attempt to steal the top set of assets from another player and only after you have placed at least one set yourself. The game continues like this until the draw pile is empty and then each player must continue pairing, discarding and challenging each other until all cards have been played.

The winner of the challenge takes all cards used in the challenge and combines them with the asset pile, making a huge (and valuable) set of assets that they place on top of their pile. I'm not sure what sort of lesson this teaches my kids about how wealth works, but maybe at least they'll get some practice with their addition. GRANDPA BECK KNOWS BEST: With over one million games sold, Grandpa Beck’s Games brings fun for all ages! This newly won or defended pile of assets will be highly sort after and you may find yourself having to defend your assets several times before your next go, so careful planning of when to use your best cards is important. At the start of the game everyone is dealt a hand of four cards with the remaining cards forming a draw pile.

You can get all of your stuff stolen by other players without much of a way to defend yourself, so if everyone decides that you’re losing this round, you’re most likely losing this round. Sure, the place where this breaks down a bit is that the game relies a bit on luck to make some of the magic happen, but that should cancel out over multiple rounds, in theory (and even if it doesn’t, it’s hard to care too much, unless you never draw a Wild card, which is frustrating). The winner takes all of the cards and places them on top of their asset pile (at a 90 degrees angle over the previous assets). Your first pair is safe and cannot be stolen; any stacks that are covered by other stacks are also safe . To keep the set from being stolen by another player, the best thing you can do is to Cover Your Assets, by creating a new pair from your hand, or by stealing a set from the top of another player's stack during your next turn.It would be nice if there were a way to defend against that sort of behavior, but that’s more of a social problem than a game problem.

To keep the set from being stolen by another player, the best thing you can do is to Cover Your Assets, by creating a new pair from your hand, or by stealing a set from the top of another player’s stack during your next turn. Sure, it’s aggressive, but that’s the point of the game, rather than a mechanic hastily added onto an otherwise not aggressive game, you know? It’s funny when it does happen, because mostly the people don’t know the intense value of the thing they just nicked. You’ll also get table talk where people tell you to steal from someone else, which is generally amusing. With this action you can form a set by combining a card from your hand with one or more matching cards from the three draft piles. If you can counter a steal and keep the pile, you can then immediately dump a lower-value pile on top of it, making it much harder to steal the expensive pile in the future.
