About this deal

If you are the primary caregiving for a family member, you know that you sometimes need to attend to the. People Who Knew Me episodes arrive Tuesdays and Thursdays on BBC Sounds, with episodes 1 and 2 available now. Listening to People Who Knew Me feels like a brain work-out, like an enigma code that needs cracking. Absorbing, riveting and utterly realistic, this heartfelt debut novel had me turning the pages late into the night.

She must decide how to explain her lies, her secrets, her selfish decisions - and ultimately her 'widowed' husband. Refreshingly raw and honest, 'People Who Knew Me' invites us deep into the world of degenerative illness. VERDICT While Emily's choices may seem selfish to some, the author does a great job of making them believable in this debut. Throughout this very readable debut novel, Hooper keeps up the tension and the pacing, teasing the reader as she reveals more and more details about Emily/Connie’s life before her decision to disappear, leaving friends and family to believe that she died when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11.The author hones in on the most provocative but all-too-real issues facing families in today’s complex world of marital strife. Not only does Emily Morris, Hooper's heroine, think about running away from her home town, she actually does it. Yet it’s so seductive because it’s in pursuit of things that people are ashamed to want, like youth, beauty, and fitness. To her horror, she also has to support his mother when she grows sick and needs around-the-clock care. In a simple but carefully thought style, author Kim Hooper constructs and delivers a story that feels real… I believe this is going to be one of the most talked books of the year.

Dylan Haskins (Commissioning Editor) said: “Sharon Horgan has been the creative genius behind some of the best TV dramas of recent years – Bad Sisters, Catastrophe, Motherland – and now she, along with the Merman / Mermade team and Daniella, are turning their hands to audio drama for the first time. Barr described how, after writing about one particularly disturbing event in his own memoir, he went into his garden and was sick. We follow them both through her cancer treatment, through their lives in California and the author tries hard to make it seem like we should feel sympathy for her – but here’s the thing: Emily would never have gone back to New York if she didn’t have an aggressive form of cancer and needed to ensure Claire was taken care of if she died. People Who Knew Me is such a book worth reading and I look forward to reading many more by this talented author in the future. I'll still be leading the brilliant podcast commissioning team we've built over the past year, but we'll be expanding the team and remit to include a focus on entertainment podcasts to drive audience growth for BBC Sounds, alongside our existing slate of narrative, investigative and sports podcasts. The stress of trying to support her husband and his terminally-ill mother while pregnant with another man’s child unhinges Emily.
