I didn’t think too much of it, I’ve played mean games in the past but haven’t found anything outrageous. A delightful walk through a carefully cultivated garden, Arboretum nearly caused me to let down my guard as I fell captive to its beauty. For each card in a path that scores, the player earns one point; if the path consists solely of trees of the color being scored, the player scores two points per card. This is a highly-interactive mean game, which is something I like, very different from games like Wingspan where you better just play it individually in your own houses without talking and the experience is the same.
You want to do all things, but you can't, and you always have to decide what's the best path (pun intended) to choose.Paths don’t need to be of a particular tree type – any tree will do, provided you can trace a path from a lower number to higher number. If you try to begin with a one and/or end with an eight, you may hurt yourself come scoring time if you can’t defend against an opponent who has the one or the eight of the suit you’re trying to score. You can get one point through the positive action of planting a tree, or if you save the right card you can remove 5 from your opponent.
Sure, you may want to do those things, but you also have to remember that your right to score whatever you’ve built isn’t guaranteed unless you can win that right.
