Registered address: Unit 5, Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, LE5 3EF, United kingdom. But Anna Hibiscus' life is about to change in many ways: cousin Joy is going to get married, and Grandfather.

It’s interesting to me that the very first story in Anna Hibiscus is a tale of how Anna and her mom, dad, and brothers try to take a vacation without the extended relatives, only to realize that they need them more than they thought. She has bright, healthy oranges and a clean dress, and sells many more oranges than the other girls, but when her father, uncle, and grandfather wonder what upset the girls selling oranges outside--some of them in very difficult life situations--Anna realizes that she made a mistake. Not only are the stories in both Anna Hibiscus and its sequel Hooray for Anna Hibiscus charming but they manage to walk the fine line that exists between truth and perception. And as a parent, I was really glad to find such a lovely book set in a different culture than the one my son is growing up in, to start to get across the idea of multiculturalism at an early age, but in a completely non-didactic way. I greatly enjoyed reading Anna Habiscus, the first in a series of chapter-books devoted to the adventures of its eponymous heroine. The language is repetitive and rhythmic, mimicking the sound of the oral tradition and childhood fables--while also including details like offices and cell phones and text messages.

In the second Anna Hibiscus picture book from Atinuke and Lauren Tobia, Anna has left her mango tree . The location of the mango tree from which Anna surveys her world is non-specific but the endpapers of the book depict an urban environment by day and night, a contrast to picture books which frequently depict only the rural landscapes of Africa. Atinuke maintains a light tone throughout but there are some thought-provoking episodes, particularly when Anna sells oranges and later comes to understand that she has deprived some poorer children of their income. When Anna's parents decide to go on a vacation to the beach just by themselves, her mom is looking forward to some time alone.Anna is likable and means well even though she might not make the best choices or not realize the consequences. If only for the diversity, but also the stress on the importance of family and the fact that Anna isn’t so sassy, I would give these to my own daughter to read. Anna Hibiscus is a little girl who lives in a beautiful white compound surrounded by her extended family. From acclaimed Nigerian storyteller Atinuke, the first in a series of chapter books set in contemporary West Africa introduces a little girl who has enchanted young readers. The story about selling oranges is particularly sweet as Anna comes to realize that her actions have very real consequences for people and also shows her how fortunate she is.

Two of the stories in the books are rather similar to one another, but I appreciated their presence. Someone came in asking for early-reader books about life in Africa and one of the librarians recommended this. They are a middle class family who commute to jobs in the city, talk on cell phones, and send text messages across the Atlantic. The book begins with a hilarious story about Anna and her parents and baby brothers going on vacation.Anna, who had only been thinking of selling oranges as a fun activity, and who had never considered the advantages she would have as a child of a wealthier family - her oranges were more colorful and juicy, and she, dressed in a clean and fresh dress, made a more appealing vendor than the poorer girls - learns just how hard life is in the city for those less fortunate than herself when she must work for the orange girls for a day. The only book that comes to mind was City Boy by Jan Michael, and that certainly was a title for older readers. Her other books include Baby, Sleepy Baby; Baby Goes to Market; B Is for Baby; and Catch That Chicken!
