Monopoly: Scooby-Doo! - 50th Anniversary Edition - Scoobypedia

Like any major franchise, merchandising and promotion is an important component of the Scooby-Doo universe. Promotions and merchandising often follow the ups, downs, and trends of Scooby production. A new series means a new slate of tie-in merchandise; a popular character means an increase in merchandise for that character. For example, Scrappy-Doo was featured as prominently on products as he was on television in the mid to late 1980s, but largely disappeared from the store shelves just as he has in television and movies. That hasn't stopped them from being released to DVD as "Season 3" of Where Are You. Another project announced in 2021 was a new series, to air on HBO Max in 2023. Simply titled Velma, it stars Mindy Kaling (who also serves as executive producer) as the voice of our favorite orange-clad mystery solver. In a break from prior series and films, it is the first Scooby series to be specifically written for and marketed to adults and is also the first series not to include Scooby-Doo, opting to focus on Velma and her relationship to Daphne, Fred, and Norville. The series premiered on January 12, 2023. The Turn of the Millennium saw the release of two theatrical Scooby-Doo movies, one in 2002 simply titled Scooby-Doo (2002) note The last HB spinoff project to be overseen by both of its company's founders. Bill Hanna died in 2001, a year before the film was released. and its sequel, 2004's Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed, note the last HB spinoff project to be overseen by Joe Barbera, who died two years later, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame as Daphne and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred. They were followed by two made-for-TV prequels, which featured a different cast. All four were loaded with Continuity Nods, and lampshaded the show's own clichés. Daphne & Velma, a live-action prequel movie focusing on said characters, was released on DVD in 2018. Shaggy and Scooby consuming very large sandwiches. In the fall of 1972, new one-hour episodes under the title The New Scooby-Doo Movies were created; each episode featuring a real or fictitious guest star helping the gang solve mysteries, including characters from other Hanna-Barbera series such as Harlem Globetrotters, Josie and the Pussycats and Speed Buggy, the comic book characters Batman and Robin (later adapted into their own Hanna-Barbera series, Super Friends, a year later), and celebrities such as Sandy Duncan, The Addams Family, Cass Elliot, Phyllis Diller, Don Knotts and The Three Stooges. Hanna-Barbera musical director Hoyt Curtin composed a new theme song for this series, and Curtin's theme remained in use for much of Scooby-Doo's original broadcast run. After two seasons and 24 episodes of the New Movies format from 1972 to 1973, CBS began airing reruns of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! series until its option on the series expired in 1976. [6] ABC years (1976–91) [ edit ] The Scooby-Doo Show and Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics [ edit ] Older teenagers and adults have admitted to enjoying Scooby-Doo because of presumed subversive themes which involve theories of drug use and sexuality, in particular that Shaggy is assumed to be a user of cannabis and Velma is assumed to be a lesbian. [78] [79] [80] Such themes were pervasive enough in popular culture to find their way into Warner Bros.' initial Scooby-Doo feature film in 2002, [80] [81] though several of the scenes were edited before release to secure a family-friendly "PG" rating. [81] Series creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears reported that they "took umbrage" to the inclusion of such themes in the Scooby-Doo feature and other places, and denied intending their characters to be drug users in any way.
