About this deal

Jacobus cautiously expanded the distillery established by his father and ensured a reliable supply of malt by purchasing a share in a local windmill. Gin is now definitely a global spirit, with excellent examples being made everywhere from the U.S. to Mexico to Southeast Asia, and even the UK has seen an infusion of new gin distilleries. The best thing about this is that each spirit is an attempt to capture some essence of its geography, often using locally sourced botanicals to flavor what otherwise would essentially be, well, vodka. With so many bottles to choose from, we’ve broken down some of the best gins out there to try now by highlighting stellar examples of the new and old school. Here are some of the best gin brands available now, from traditional London dry to brand-new innovations. It might actually work to its advantage. Because while the brand is known for producing good quality vodka and gin, it’s Spirit Works’ sloe gin that really shines through. Sometimes called Dutch gin or Holland gin, genever is a sweetened style of gin that originated in the Netherlands. Today, it is only distilled in that country and in neighboring areas of Europe. The biggest name in genever is Bols, and it is one of the few brands that is available worldwide. Another Joannes, representing the fourth generation, expanded the distillery next to the town's new Grain Exchange. Joannes went on to become the Mayor Schiedam at a time when it was the world 'capital of spirits' with some of its windmills, the tallest in the world, partly financed by the Nolets.

There are several different types of gin including London dry (botanicals are added during distillation, only water and a touch of sweetener allowed to be added afterward); Plymouth (only made at one distillery); and New Western (juniper still present, but other botanicals take centerstage). Once a one-bottle brand, Aviation has expanded its portfolio to include Aviation Old Tom. It's the distillery's take on an old, sweeter style of gin, but they don't add sugars or flavorings, which is customary. Instead, they rely on whiskey barrel aging to bring out an Old Tom taste and accentuate the original Aviation's natural sweetness.

Unlike London Dry Gin, which can be found in plenty of variations across the planet, there’s only one brand that sells Plymouth Gin. It’s aptly called the same name. Plymouth Gin differs from London Dry Gin in that it’s slightly less dry – likely due to the higher concentration of root ingredients. It has a slightly earthier flavor and comes in two core strengths – standard and Navy Strength. Ketel One Vodka's success was not built upon clever marketing or PR, it was built by Bob and Carl going from bar to bar, meeting bartenders, forming enduring friendships and telling people about the vodka their father had created.

Spirit Works doesn’t just distill gin; it offers a whole portfolio of spirits, including vodka, whisky, barrel gin, and sloe gin. While some might assume that this works to its disadvantage when it comes to honing the fine details of spirit crafting, it’s not a problem that Spirit Works has suffered from. NOLET’S Finest Gin are distilled in a specially commissioned copper pot still, Still #19, that combines pot still and column still distillations into one process. The pot still provides the initial distillation while the column still refines the spirit to achieve the precise botanical balance. NOLET’S Gins are crafted with a secret botanical base in which each botanical used is individually macerated and then distilled, allowing for precise and intense expressions of its characteristics. From that first phone conversation, I sensed the friendly warmth and sense of calm the members of the Nolet family seem to exude. Always smartly presented in a sharp suit, complete with branded lapel pin, Bob, his brother Carl and father Carolus have an almost presidential air about them. But importantly, they are friendly people who remember names and faces. Carolus used the antique coal-fired alembic copper pot still, 'Distilleerketel #1' which had also been the inspiration for his premium genever, to make a pot still vodka. However, pot stills produce very heavy-tasting vodkas which was not the character he was searching for, so he blended this with column still vodka. After much experimentation, Carolus perfected the methods and the blend used to make Ketel One Vodka. A vodka with a crispness from the column still and the rounded sophistication from the pot still. This gin is distilled in a copper pot still named "Marjorie." The botanical list includes juniper, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, coriander seed, lemon peel, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel, and orris root. It is bottled at a standard 40 percent ABV (80 proof). Another big difference is the distillation process. Instead of being a simple distillation, like vodka, botanicals are introduced early on during the process to maximize their flavors and aromas. Terminology: The terms to know when talking about gin The saffron also gives Nolet’s Reserve its slightly tinted amber coloring and warm, deep spice flavor. Unsurprisingly, it’s a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

Fixative: The most important botanicals used to bind the flavors of the gin. Some of the most common ones include orris and angelica root. Malfy offers a variety of flavors, but the clear favorite is the Gin Con Limone. The brand uses coastal-grown Amalfi lemons and Sicilian varieties in its lemon-flavored gin, promising a taste of the sunshine in every sip. From its rich heritage to its unique use of fresh botanicals, it’s time to get to know all about NOLET’S Finest Gins. The Heritage of NOLET’S GinBy around 1880, Schiedam had 400 distillers and another Joannes moved his family's distillery to its present location at Hoofdstraat. Distribution was helped by the new railways and canals that spread across Europe at the time, while steamships started to sail from the nearby shipyards of Rotterdam. As millions of Europeans sought a new life in the United States so the invention of the telegraph opened up communications. A producer will start with a base spirit, either sourced from a larger distillery or made in-house. This neutral spirit is then infused with botanical flavor by redistilling it after steeping the botanicals in the liquid or allowing the vapors during distillation to extract flavors from the botanicals hanging in a basket high up in the still. The spirit is then cut to proof before bottling. It makes a delightful Gin and Tonic. but my favorite is a Martini served up with a twist. Though north of 47% ABV, Nolet Silver Gin is lighter and easier to drink than its strength might otherwise indicate. Overall, Nolet Silver Gin

However, having said that, one of the reasons gin remains so popular is that it needs little more than a splash of tonic to enjoy. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. Aside from that, there really are no limits, and today's gins feature a wide range of herbs, spices, flowers and fresh fruit to create the complex, sultry spirits we know today. This was in the days before the internet so being a Dutch vodka I called the trade department of the Dutch embassy in London and said we were keen on importing Ketel One and could they put me in touch with its makers. It was weeks later when out of the blue, one morning Bob called me.
