About this deal

But soon rumours were spreading from America about a frightening illness being dubbed the ‘gay flu’, and Jill and her friends now found their formerly carefree existence under threat. I think I went into this with the wrong expectations, and also I think this is for people who are very into the theatre musical scene. I had no idea who anyone was, and so I didn’t feel much connection to the author or the stories she was telling. ROYAL MAIL STRIKES DURING NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2022 WILL DELAY DELIVERIES. THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE STRIKE DATES CAN BE VIEWED HERE . There’s a delicious honouring foreword from fellow Wales born – Russell T Davies – who shares his love for Jill and the reasons he based It’s A Sin on her life. The book is full of joy, of wonderful anecdotes and insights into lives long gone, letting them flash into our memories with a golden whirl of camp gay radiance.

So what was it like to be gay and live in 1980s and 1990s London? This book will tell you everything you need to know, and more. Like a book I read previously and reviewed here, by a different author, I came to this book via BBC radio. With this book, the radio programme records the author joining her old friend, and the writer of the foreword of this book, Russell T Davies https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0dn... It is a tonic to listen to.It is absolutely awful, it feels like you are on a summer camp in high school. Everything is so structured with so many ridiculous rules and everything is centered around "getting laid". What are we, 16 years old?! But soon rumours were spreading from America about a frightening illness being dubbed the ‘gay flu’, and Jill and her friends – spirited Juan Pablo, Jae with his beautiful voice, upbeat Dursley, and many others – found that their formerly carefree existence now under threat.

Review: Love From the Pink Palace by Jill Nalder | Terrence

The people living here are going to be time poor and will want things at their fingertips,” Mr Crema said. It is Henry who disappears first, as a mysterious new illness arrives, hitting a now-familiar wall of fear, denial and misinformation. The disappearances keep coming. Friends from the scene “go home” to their families and never return, lost to what relatives might decide to call cancer. In March 2020, the former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe wrote a column for the Daily Express suggesting that Aids was one of a number of frightening epidemics that had not “proved as devastating as feared”. Though this series finished filming before the current pandemic, it stands as a riposte to such an abhorrent idea. The sheer waste of lives is devastating. To those lost to the killer we call AIDS, the world of PrEP, treatment and people on medication who ‘can’t pass it on’ is alien. I cannot help but ask if we are doing enough to honour their legacy and sacrifice? In particular, one of Jill’s fallen friends tried everything to survive until they were drugs available to control the HIV virus – they very sadly did not but did inspire others to fight on. Some of those are still with us today. That friend made it to 7 August 1995, painfully close to life-saving triple-drug therapy that would arrive less than 12 months later. It was not just Phantom of the Opera that was robbed of such talent. We all were. Time and again. For many gay men of my generation in London, whether you lived or died depended on when you arrived in the city. I pitched up in 1988, but didn’t venture into the bars and clubs of the scene until a couple of years later. It probably saved my life.

Come back when you're older

The staff that work there are either 18 year olds who are ignorant about anywhere else in the world and think they have found the best place on Earth or 35 years old, who still think they are 18 years old and spend half the time chasing any girls they can get.

Takes approximately 1-3 working days to arrive, (but can take longer during busy periods like bank holidays or Pride Month) By sharing the lives of her ‘boys’ with us and letting us laugh, while we feel the trembling possibilities they all felt were theirs for the taking, Jill does what she promised them. They’ll not be forgotten. But soon rumours were spreading from America about a frightening illness being dubbed the 'gay flu', and Jill and her friends - spirited Juan Pablo, Jae with his beautiful voice, upbeat Dursley, and many others - now found their formerly carefree existence under threat. Jill is a busy person, quite how they managed to do so much is a miracle. She is also modest, and although allowing the wonderful excitement of her life to shine here, often through the lens of others’ lives, she also shares the gratitude of being able to experience such talented people. The hostels beach area was beautiful though and we spent many hours on the loungers and in the water. Breakfast and dinner, which is included in the price, was delicious. Breakfast was yogurt, bread, ham, cheese and eggs every morning. Dinner varied but was very good every night (big portions). The staff seats you with people you don't know, which is really nice and a good way to get to meet new people. This sat on my tbr pile for far too long. Partly because I just wasn’t ready to go there emotionally again. Sure enough I was sobbing from the foreword. It’s Jill, real Jill with all her courage, strength, dignity, honesty, tenacity and love taking us from the pink palace and way beyond in her words with her boys. If you loved it’s a sin, this is perfect to follow up with. Sharing the enormous efforts of nurses, doctors, volunteers, lesbians, community reps who worked together to support the gay men falling ill across London, Jill shows how a community formed an effective response in the face of government apathy and negligence. Campaigning for AIDS awareness and research, channelling anger, and simply being there for people at the end.
