About this deal

Over the course of my studies, I have amassed a large quantity of notes and summaries. Over time, I will try to upload as many as possible – it’d be nice if they were all in one place. I am a co-author of the eleventh edition of Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, I have written two books with my colleague Dr Pete Wothers on general chemistry, and I have written a specialist textbook on NMR. You can find out more about these books below. Atkins' Physical Chemistry

Andrew Burrows, John Holman, Simon Lancaster, Tina Overton, Andrew Parsons, Gwen Pilling, Gareth Price With Peter Atkins and Julio de Paula (11th Edition OUP 2017). Chemical Structure and Reactivity: an integrated approach As the temperature falls, the water will freeze so the beaker can be lifted with the mat underneath. So far I’ve only done a few chapters of volume 1. I really intended to work through it in its totality at one stage, but I realised that I should use my time before university to learn things other than physics.

You can view my series of graduate-level lectures based on this book on YouTube through the ANZMAG channel. Why Chemical Reactions HappenIf this is the first time you use this feature, you will be asked to authorise Cambridge Core to connect with your account. b) particles in a solid having much less freedom than those in a gas and that, other factors being equal, entropy increasing in the sequence S(gas) > S(liquid) > S(solid)

For example, if a reaction releases a lot of energy we can use a thermometer and measure the temperature rise in degrees Celsius (C). The issue of why chemical reactions happen can be used to introduce the session.List views about this from the students, with little discussion. Retain the list for review at the end. It is the responsibility of the teacher to carry out appropriate risk assessments for the demonstrations.

In this chapter, we will look at the thermodynamics and kinetics of reactions, which tell us why some reactions happen and some do not. We will see some of the general features that can make reactions favourable, and look at why some reactions may be favoured over others if there are alternative pathways. Assessment for Learning is an effective way of actively involving students in their learning. Each session plan comes with suggestions about how to organise activities and worksheets that may be used with students. Builds on and reinforces students' prior knowledge by expanding on many ideas and examples first encountered at school or college

The Keeler Group - Why chemical reactions happen

The text takes a unified approach to the subject, avoiding the traditional divisions of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry and so helps the reader to develop a real overview of chemical processes. If you mix vinegar and baking soda, a reaction will occur, where lots of bubbles of carbon dioxide gas form. The question ‘Why do chemical reactions happen?’ is a basic one to answer. The best time to approach this issue is within a series of lessons on thermodynamics, once students are used to calculating enthalpy change values. Learning objectives Entropy increases when a substance is broken up into multiple parts. The process of dissolving increases entropy because the solute particles become separated from one another when a solution is formed. Because I was considering a career as an actuary, I thought it might be interesting to take one of the exams to get a better understanding of the material. Following the ‘study plan’ from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, I was torn between CT1 (financial maths) and CT3 (statistics). I decided to choose CT1, because I was already confident with the CT3 content, so I thought that I would learn more from studying CT1.Chemical reactions help us to solve crimes and explain mysteries. By analyzing blood and tissue samples, for example, police are able to identify the perpetrators of crimes. Chemical reactions are also the tools we use to date fossils, analyze ancient materials, and better understand how our ancestors lived.
