The gauge on the right is held at a standard pressure by adjusting the pressure regulator while the gauge on the left shows an example reading of 85, or 15% leakage. On top of that, racing engines are usually modified to have higher compression anyway, so you can't rely on a factory manual for the answer.

In some scenarios, an engine may create an acceptable amount of compression but worn-out piston rings or valves could be allowing pressure to escape. It DOESN"T mean you have fixed your valve problem by this method when you achieve good readings using this trick, merely that you have for sure found your problem. I used it a few times, replaced the guages with ones I had, tried it again, then tossed it in the trash! If you take the valve cover off you can "POP" the valves slightly with a wooden dowel and a small hammer.

The use of a controlled, regulated compressed air source makes a leak-down test much more consistent and repeatable. Pressure is fed into a cylinder via the spark plug hole and the flow, which represents any leakage from the cylinder, is measured.
