Some devices, usually with a transformer output, provide a balanced output that is "floating" with respect to ground; the impedance to ground from each side of the output is high. More commonly, devices drive one or both sides of the balanced interface with a signal referenced to ground. When one side is not driven, care is taken to assure that the impedance to ground is equal to the impedance of the driven side. In this design, the tip carries an audio signal, while the sleeve carries the ground, just as it does with a TS connector. Although that solution will work, it has virtually no protection against RF interference, and a better solution can be obtained if you start with balanced cables and modify the unbalanced end instead. In this case, the hot signal wire is connected to the unbalanced tip, the cold signal wire to the unbalanced sleeve, and the balanced cable screen is left isolated and disconnected. In this way the cable screen will provide a useful degree of RF protection, although it isn't as good as it could be... If you’re using an XLR cable, insert the male connector (the one with pins) into the female port (the one with holes) on your audio device. If you’re using a TRS cable, insert the connector into the TRS port on your device. Given the benefits of balanced audio cables, i.e., their better audio quality due to lower interference, why would you want to use an unbalanced cable?

Speaker cables are unbalanced cables that typically use much heavier gauge conductor wires than patch, instrument, or mic cables. These heavy-gauge wires are necessary because speakers are expected to carry much higher voltage signals than other types of audio cables. Speaker cables may be fitted with any of several connectors, including ¼-inch phone or MDP or “banana clip” connectors. RCA connectors are often used in paired cables that deliver a stereo signal. Most cables with ¼-inch connectors that you will come across in a studio or on stage are probably unbalanced. Unless they are specifically labeled as ‘balanced’, it is best to assume that they are unbalanced, so you don’t inadvertently mess up what is supposed to be a balanced connection.
