About this deal

It’s also uprated the battery life, quoting a pretty amazing 1,550 shots on a single charge – that’s four or five times more shots than you’d expect to get from a mirrorless camera. As such, I think the kit lens is too familiar (phones can zoom in the standard range just fine) to accomplish that end, at least at first, and so people use it like a phone, usually to middling results. Face-detection AF only works in Live View mode, where the rear screen is used to frame up your photo, instead of the viewfinder and although it reacts quickly in sunny conditions, indoors it got laggy seemed to have trouble keeping up.

Pressing the shutter down half-way to initiate autofocus before firing a shot shows you what point is selected, but the red dot only appears for half a second, is quite faint, and occasionally will trigger a red glow from other spots in the viewfinder. You could be right though regarding D5500 and D5600 which are almost identical, except for minor feature and body update.

Its easy-to-use design and excellent picture and video quality, and easy sharing options make this camera your ideal photography partner. It tops the chart in our resolution test, matching even a low-end full frame camera for resolving power. I use it even when wearing glasses, but then - whether I see the frame edge to edge or miss the far corners - it depends on particular glasses. Yes the AF system is a bit too simplistic for some enthusiast and gearheads tastes but I think it works well.

smeisinger I don't know what your experience has been with EVF but for myself as with many i've spoken, relying on them can throw off your exposure at times (even white balance can be off), either over exposing or under, a histogram is more reliable is you know how to read one regarding exposure. It may be a beginner level camera, but if you put its images alongside those from the best ASP-C cameras out there you might find it pretty difficult to tell which camera was used. These cameras have their purpose, and I actually think relatively experienced photographers (or hard-working beginners) can get a lot out of them. It’s not perfect of course, I do wish it had a better video mode and a second control dial would be nice but overall, I find it really hard to hate the D3500.The situation reverses when looking at FF DSLRs, all of which have real glass pentaprisms, providing a view that is brighter and clearer than on most FF MILCs. I shoot wide and long focal lengths mostly, so I got myself primes in the wide end and in the long end. In practice, the D3500 delivers sharp, vibrant and very well exposed images, and the 18-55mm AF-P lens performs really well for an inexpensive kit lens, with consistent sharpness across the focal range and right to the edges of the frame. But on the other hand when even some dpreview members say phones take better pics, I think it might not be worth it for Nikon to do that.

Something basic and easy, like a closeup of a friend, AF with full auto exposure (and popup flash, even). Even with it's pentamirror viewfinder, still leagues ahead of the Atari style fuzzy dot matrix viewfinders on competing mirrorless alternatives. A helpful Guide Mode is available to aid in becoming acquainted with the D3500 through a series of step-by-step tutorials.Nikon's latest Z-mount lens is a 600mm you can handhold for hours for wildlife and sports photography or pack away for travel when you want to leave the monopod and tripod at home.
