About this deal

I would absolutely love another novel set in this universe, and the point at which this novel arrives could be seen as a great widening of that universe’s potential scope. There are also millions of planets lying around that have been terraformed, then left forgotten, then rediscovered and colonized, then forgotten, then rediscovered. Jeff Noon and Steve Beard combine their powers to tell the story of an otherworldly London and its waterways in Gogmagog. Alastair Reynolds kann fantastische Welten erschaffen - das gelingt ihm selbst in seinen mittelmäßigen Werken.

This is my second Alastair Reynolds book, the first being Revelation Space which is his debut novel published 8 years before House of Suns. It would be a shame to spoil any of the treats within for those who haven’t read House of Suns, but Campion’s encounter with The Vigilance, the entities that hunger for the universe’s data, is an early highlight, and one of many. Endangered Species: Though not a "species", per se, this is pretty much what happens to the Gentian Line.Large-scale human civilizations almost invariably seem to collapse and disappear within a few millennia (a phenomenon referred to as "turnover"), the limits of sub-lightspeed travel making it too difficult to hold interstellar empires together. Underneath the pages and pages of awkward dialogue is a plot that appears intricate at first but left me feeling underwhelmed at the end. That said the story is not hard to follow providing you give it time to unfold and settle you in its very far future settings. It's not often that I feel indifferent to a book for as long as I did with this one but then end up absolutely loving it, but that's exactly what happened. Alien Sky: The world that the novel starts on has a special atmospheric bubble which, at night, amplifies faint stars and nebulae, creating a very colorful night sky.

From 1991 until 2007, he lived in The Netherlands, where he was employed by The European Space Agency as an astrophysicist. Die beiden Protagonisten Campion und Purslane muss man einfach gern haben, die Geschichte rund um die Shatterlings ist gut gemacht. We could build cities like that… But we haven’t… and now they’ve left their mark on deep time, whereas we’ll be doing well to be remembered a circuit from now. Using information gained from the other two robots and his own memories, Hesperus (who is now an amalgamation of both Hesperus and the Spirit of the Air) has pieced together what is going on: Cadence and Cascade have discovered that the Line was involved in the accidental extermination of a forgotten earlier race of machine people, dubbed the "First Machines".Chekhov's Gun: There are few mentions about a case of Gentian Stardam failing and the Gentian Line trying to cover it up.

Die Welt ist typisch Reynolds: epische Science Fiction, in Zeit und Raum gigantisch, aber trotzdem stimmig. House of Suns is set in a different universe than the Revelation Space series, and centres on a group (family? Their relationship could be seen as problematic, of course, and certainly would be by their fellow shatterlings (is it incestuous to sleep with a fellow clone, or the ultimate act of narcissism? But when two of you see it… knowing that you’ll both have that memory for the rest of your lives, but that each of you will only ever hold and incomplete half of it, and that it won’t ever really exist as a whole until you’re together… that’s worth more than one plus one. The novel is divided into eight parts, with the first chapter of each part taking the form of a narrative flashback to Abigail Gentian’s early life (six million years earlier, in the 31st century), before the cloning and the creation of the Gentian Line.
