I heard this lady on the radio so bought this book for grandsons birthday to go with other gifts, I wish I’d kept it myself first but I’m sure I’ll be able to read it in the near future, never to old to learn. How interesting to learn that ‘Reindeer, birds, bees and fish can see in ultraviolet, and snakes, frogs and insects can see infrared!

Vibrantly illustrated in full colour throughout, this non-fiction book is incredibly friendly and appealing. Divided into the colours of the rainbow, each section explains how we see that particular colour, and explores nature linked to it. Colourful fonts, quirky captions and short, nicely divided paragraphs make the book lively and engaging to read and dip in and out of repeatedly. After each colour is explored , the book cleverly goes 'beyond the rainbow' to look at the dark and those colours that the human eye cannot see. The chapters that follow are divided according to the colours of the rainbow, starting with red of course. Author and planetary physicist Sheila Kanani is also an experienced educator, her scientific knowledge and presenting skills shine through the book. It was moving to see the author and illustrator are sure to include the importance of rainbows as symbols in our current lives. There is so much new information to absorb as well as answers to age old questions such as 'Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes? For example, at Indian weddings some brides wear red which symbolises love, commitment and strength and that in the early 1900s, purple was one of the colours representing Women’s Suffrage which stood for freedom and dignity.
