While some may feel the film has moved too far away from the franchise’s signature violent sequences (I for one was disappointed the film didn’t deliver on what the trailer promised), Cohen’s editing vitalises the film’s visceral tone, daring the audience not to look away, reminiscent of Ben Wheatley’s Kill List. RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER charts the inexorable rise of Carlton Leach from one of the most feared generals of the football terraces to becoming a member of a notorious gang of criminals who rampaged their ways through London and Essex in the late eighties, and early nineties. But when their cash gets stolen and Pat is threatened by a local firm, Pat comes up with an even more audacious plan and to get them back to England in time for Tony to walk Nigel Benn out to one of history's greatest fights. I can only think critics are offended by the subject matter, as this is a pacey, well-acted, stylishly shot exploitation movie. Manookian delivers a remarkable performance as the coked-fuelled dealer, hitting the fine line between desperate, sleazy, and wildness and achieving what should be implausible; making Rolfe almost sympathetic.The 80s/90s period detail is captured very well, with haircuts, fashions and soundtrack, and the violence doesn't let up. As his notoriety increased, Leach became entwined in a violent series of events, which culminated in the Rettendon Range Rover murders of 1995, one of the most infamous slayings in British Gangland history. If anything it can still sit with the likes of The Football Factory and Essex Boys as a more gritty style of gangster/hooliganism film and arguably one of the better ones. The acting in Rise of the Footsoldierat times is quite hit and miss at times, some scenes lack the power that is required but there are certain actors who do rise to the occasion to instil their characters with just the right amount of malice.

RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER II was one of the most eagerly awaited British Gangster film sequels in years, it’s more grown up and certainly much darker than the first film, visually it looks stunning and lovers of the British Gangster film genre will love it. It is three decades of his life following him from football hooliganism, to bouncer, his involvement in the criminal aspects of the early 'rave' scene and subsequently becoming a violent criminal. But when their cash gets stolen and Pat is threatened by a local firm, he comes up with an audacious plan to get them back to England in time for one of history's greatest fights. I think that the perfect cut of the Rise of the Footsoldier is probably I would say 2/3 the new cut, 1/3 the old cut.As of now, it is has not been confirmed whether Vengeance is intended to be the final film in the series.
