This threw a lot in – the lad's hidden destiny, the swapping of things from our world to his, collective global amnesia in light of the end of the world, rescue from monsters, farting pets – and then had a humongous info-dump of exposition for the character known there as Jayben to learn what was what.I went to places we’d been to on holiday and travelled the tube on the routes I had taken in my teens.

It’s important to note that those books set in historical times do show some ignorance and subsequent ill-treatment, which can be hard to read about. He has always craved adventure and a place to fit in, though it could mean losing his family forever. The world-building and plot are complex; packed with intricate detail, engaging characters and quirky creatures like the fuzzy, green, farting skoggle. It sounds pretty cool, but The Book of Destiny—which instructs Jayben on his mission—is filled with blank pages.
