Having said that, I retain reservations over the plot’s efficacy and my lack of investment in outcomes until the end. do speak for an edited narrative, it's also so believable as an original-Artemis-POV that I then also have trouble taking the conceit seriously. For their own good, they are given pills to prevent them from dreaming, because dreams might impact on their sense of reality. Thompson works this chilly atmosphere of alienation into one of suspense and foreboding, keeping our curiosity piqued as a crewman disappears and suspicions arise that the dryads may be evolving beyond their programming, developments to which Artemis responds by growing closer to the most advanced dryad, Troy. Chimera, by Alice Thompson, is set in an imagined future where faster than lightspeed space travel is a possibility.

It's not a fast paced sci Fi thriller, it builds it's momentum to leave an absolutely insane ending. Alice Thompson… grabs hold of the detective fiction tradition, flings it in the air, lets it crash to the floor, and jumps on it till it’s in smithereens. So much of what they find on the Moon appears to be manifestations of the previous astronauts’ imaginations or dreams.

By a happy coincidence, this is similar ground to that covered by Alice Thompson’s latest book, a hauntingly cerebral science fiction novel that makes use of terms drawn from psychology and mysticism, but is arguably even more beholden to poetry. But Alice Thompson is so brilliant, and takes the stories and characteristics of these Gods to create an original, and thought provoking unsettling sci fi and at times horror, space mission. Instead, the focus is on Artemis’s almost clinical observation of the character traits and behaviours of crew members and dryads, which appear incongruous.

We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories. The crew is made up of a mix of humans and dryads (a hybrid of programmed computer and cloned human DNA) – with the mix of human to robot in each varying. With its gothic motifs, this dark portrait of a ‘fairytale’ marriage is full of mystery and suspense … an elegant and bloodily shocking entertainment. but Thompson takes a very distinctive approach, the notion of “dreams as poetic metaphors of thought” allowing for explorations of the nature of consciousness and where it resides, the fear of losing one’s identity, the omnipresence of AI, the frightening implications of virtual reality and the suggestion of forces powerful enough to override both machine programming and human nature – all overlapping and interacting with each other in interesting and inventive ways. But the AI Mission Control has hinted that her knowledge will be vital when they reach their destination.

This isn't bad, but it also means that I wouldn't say it's really "Sci-Fi for people who don't read sci-fi". Ultimately, this is a very interesting book with some flaws in execution that made me more curious about the author's other work, which I can imagine working better. She was the former keyboard player with post-punk eighties band, The Woodentops and joint winner with Graham Swift of The James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction for her first novel, Justine . Soon Violet herself is interned in the asylum for treatment only to discover, on coming out, that her husband has hired a nanny while she has been away, the beautiful, enigmatic Clara. She is glad to be on this mission because she can trust that all the materials around her are real, unlike the ubiquitous fabricated scenarios of virtual realities on technology-obsessed Earth.

The intricacies of dreams and humanity, the intricacies of technology and how it conflicts with religion and beliefs, in the nest of it all in the AI Dryads and Virtual realities, the driving forces of life, ahhh I'm fangirling! It’s a wise decision, as this prose style also matches better the sparse landscape of the island itself. Salt is a small independent publisher and the two books I have read from them have pushed me out of my usual genre in a good way. The world building in the story is kept at a fairly superficial level but what is revealed is depressingly believable – other than the huge leap in man’s ability to personally explore outer space. But Mission Control have hinted that her knowledge will be vital when the ship reaches its destination. The Book Collector throws the essential elements of the gothic chiller into a blender and what emerges is something between pastiche and critique, in which its author never loses sight of the need to give her readers, first and foremost, an unputdownable yarn. The idea of erasure reminds me of Niamh Prior’s recent short story titled ‘Peter and Jane’ , which uses only the 300 key words from the eponymous Ladybird First Reader Series to convey dark tales of Peter and Jane’s adulthood.Synopsis For disillusioned author Max Long, the offer of a writing-fellowship on the mysterious-sounding ‘Burnt Island’ is a godsend. The case takes Will to brothels, nightclubs and amusement arcades in the Scottish seaside resort of Portobello. Based off of earlier reviews I think this understanding of how mythology played largely in this story gave it a low avg. Thompson was educated at St George's School, Edinburgh then read English at Oxford and wrote her Ph. Similarly, it is the sub-text of Chimera that haunts, and the questions this provocative novel asks.
