About this deal

D Make the length of line between snoods long enough so that the two hooks do not touch, and therefore do not tangle. For the hooks, 1/0 – 2/0 circle hooks are most likely all you need. However, it’s a good idea to test other sizes and shapes if you struggle to catch fish. The flapper rig offers you the opportunity to test different things and combinations, so make sure to benefit from that. Using the 1-hook version of the flapper rig is, therefore, a good idea when fishing mixed seabeds. When to use the flapper rig for shore fishing ? With all the advantages and pitfalls we discussed above, it is obvious that the flapper rig is the way to go when targeting small species at a short casting distance from shore.

The flapper rig is one of the most popular line setups for surf fishing. With a smart design that allows casting multiple hooks at once, this rig offers systematically a higher bite per cast ratio and adds more exciting moments to fishing trips.

Pompano, the surfperch, the bream, the whiting, flounder, the puppy drum… are the kind of species we talk about here. These species are generally found around the first sandbar of the surf (typically at 20-40 yards from the shoreline), and thus the casting distance should not be a cause of concern. Moreover, these species usually feed in schools, so throwing multiple hooks may result in multiple catches and should increase your overall productivity. Since this setup specifically targets large fish, it’s usually a good idea to use it on only one rod, while you use your other rod(s) with more conventional setups to catch smaller fish in the surf. The number and sequence is a matter of choice, but a common choice is to thread on a sequin, then a small luminous bead, another sequin and another bead onto the hook snood. Two hooks are a popular compromise and very often the choice of the freelance angler for runof- the-mill venues and also mixed species fishing. A sensible starting point would be for the gap between the silicone and the hookbait to be the same as the diameter of the hookbait. If you want to shorten the Hair, you can wrap the excess material around the hook shank. Be mindful, and allow enough of a gap for separation, so that the hook settles inconspicuously next to the hookbait. In this article I’ll show you how to set up a flapper rig, and will aso cover what bait to use with it, and how to fish it for the best results. What is a flapper rig (and what is it good for)?Personally, I only use the flapper rig when I have more than one rod (Which I usually do). I tie the 2-hooks version of this rig on one rod, and another rig (Generally the fish finder rig), on the other rods. While the overall structure of the flapper rig is similar to that of other multi-hook rigs for bottom fishing, what sets it apart from these is that the snoods of the flapper rig are tied to swivels fixed on the leader with the help of crimps. By the way, the method of crimping the swivels to the leader line also comes in handy for other setups, such as the running rig, which makes it worth learning how to do. What bait should you use with a flapper rig? For uncomplicated short and middle range casting from piers and beaches and for a host of species, the two-hook flapper is hard to beat. The high low rig is another popular double hook surf fishing rig that comes with the sinker attached to the end of the line, as well as two hooks tied to the leader above the sinker via T-knots.

The pennel rig features two hooks on a single snood, allowing for the use of larger baits like whole squid or big fish fillets. This rig is particularly effective when targeting larger species like cod or bass. The double-hook setup not only allows for better bait presentation but also increases the chances of hooking a fish securely. Pennel rigs are versatile and can be used over both rough and smooth ground. For my flapper rigs, I use 60-80 lb monofilament rig bodies because mono is stretchy and helps to absorb stress. Also, monofilament is less visible in the water. This gives a great advantage when using the flapper rig as it’s made up of many items and can spook fish when thrown in the water. Using an invisible line will help to improve your presentation and thus make fish more willing to bite. It consists of a weight tied to the end of the line, and two 3 way swivels that are positioned about 12 inches above the weight, and 8 to 10 inches apart from each other.

B Trap your snood swivel between a pair of beads, followed by a pair of crimps (or stop knots – these allow you to adjust the distance between snoods). Secondly, the shape of the pyramid sinker allows it to burrow into the bottom of sandy areas in the surf, which is very effective for anchoring the rig in strong tides. Obviously, the rod with the flapper rig is the most alerting and keeps me active all the time. However, I can’t stop using it because it’s the one with most catches, it provides me with a lot of baitfish and helps me tweak the rigs of my other rods. When to not use the flapper rig for shore fishing ? Hook snoods – 10-20lb low memory copolymer or fluorocarbon (a rig incorporating booms is recommended for using lighter snoods).Beads or sequins are optional attractors on the hook snoods and can be held in position by adding a bait stop above them. Make these from 1cm length of silicon sleeving. Pass the line through the sleeve twice and then pull the line tight to form the stopping device. The flapper rig can be fished in the surf with cut bait or natural bait, and works well for medium range casting and a bait and wait strategy. This saltwater setup is a multi-hook rig with the weight attached to the end of the line, and the hooks attached to dropper loop knots above the sinker. The double drop bottom rig is a 2-hook bottom fishing setup for saltwater that uses 3-way swivels to attach the snoods of the hooks. You can then keep using the flapper rig but concentrate more on this bait or use it on another line setup that serves best your fishing objectives and conditions.
