The Ryzen 7 6800U is AMD's latest and greatest chip from their new Zen 3+ line for ultraportables, while the Intel Core i7-1260P is headlining a number of today's powerful thin and light systems based on the Alder Lake architecture.

I listened to MUNA's "Everything But Me" in a conference room, which was filled with sound from the two speakers. But the Zenbook prioritized the vocals at the expense of everything else, and I found that the guitars, keyboards and drums kind of melded together.On Balanced, the system limits the fans to around 36-37 dB noise levels. The CPU ends up stabilizing at 20-22W, with temperatures in the high 80s C. The performance takes a ~10% hit, with the scores stabilizing around 1450 points. Asus specifies a maximum brightness of up to 550 cd/m², but this only applies to HDR content. Our measurements show a maximum of ~570 cd/m² for a small white image, which then becomes ~460 cd/m² for a near-complete white image. Unfortunately, HDR switching does not work automatically, but has to be activated manually in the Windows display settings.

In Resident Evil 2 the 6800U also performed very well, smashing the 1260P with DDR4 memory and outperforming Intel's H-series parts with DDR5 memory by 16 percent despite the gulf in power consumption. While this class of ultraportable is still a way off an entry-level gaming system with an RTX 3050, the sorts of performance numbers put up here are playable. Radeon RX 6850M XT – designed for 1440p+ gaming, with a design power of 130-165 W, meant for full-size performance notebooks; There’s little to complain about the overall thermal performance of this design, even closer to the 25W sustained power settings. Still, fresh air intake is somewhat choked with the laptop sitting on the desk, so you should consider opting for a cooling pad for long work/gaming sessions. While Asus has tuned the stereo sound system in a way that accomplishes incredible volume, it's not as even as I like my music to be. The other part of this bundle is the excellent AMD Ryzen 6000 platform offered with this series, the best-balanced hardware option available for ultraportable design these days. Sure, this compact product with a minimalistic thermal design isn’t fully capable of delivering the full potential of the Ryzen 7 6800U hardware, but even so, the implementation delivers solid performance with daily multitasking, sustained workloads, and even light gaming, and should cater to the needs of most potential buyers. The Dell Inspiron 16 5620 is our test system for the Intel processor, which allows the CPU to run in the 25W to 28W power class like the Asus system with Ryzen. This gives us a baseline apples to apples comparison, though this machine only uses 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, but again, it's the best we could find right now for testing.

Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302, AMD Ryzen 6000 series)

Note: We haven’t yet tested any of the Ryzen U 7000 platforms. I’m updating this section in the future, as we get to review the Ryzen 77840U, Ryzen 7 7735U and Ryzen 7 7730U processors. You might still find matte IPS variants with the 14-inch ZenBooks, but even those are a rare occurrence these days, as Asus are aggressively pushing their OLED options; plus, these are only available with Intel or AMD Ryzen 5000 hardware. You will get an IPS screen with the Ryzen 6000 U powered Lenovo Yoga 7 at some point this year, or with the Ryzen 6000 HS ROG Flow X13, but those are touch as well, so I’m not aware of any matte-screen alternative with similar specs at this point.
