The University of the Third Age or U3A is a bit of a misleading title as there are no exams, not tests and no paid teachers. It is more a self help organization. The point of the U3A is its commitment to shared learning for people who are retired or not in paid employment and want to stimulate and be stimulated.

In Scotland there are 40 U3As, each run by its members but with back-up from U3A in Scotland and from the parent U3A Trust. Throughout the U.K. membership is now over 275,000.

What makes the U3A different from other organizations for the retired is its interest groups run by members themselves. At present there are 10 different interest that meet at various venues.

Membership is £11.00 per year. There is a nominal admission charge to the monthly meeting of £1.50. The U3A in Fife is a registered charity SC036555
