About this deal

Kyoko is easily the most interesting part of the manga, she doesn't speak very much when she is present, which builds her entire appeal to me. She has this psychic third eye that drives people mad, what does she know? What powers does she have? Why did she survive? Filled with stellar artwork and a story that weaves between cosmic mythos, religious iconography and classic horror, this is Ito Junji with some of his best work in recent years. In terms of what’s published in the United States, you’re one of the more prolific manga creators out there. These days your schedule is three books a year, and while some of that is reprinted material, it’s still quite a lot. When [fellow mangaka] Naoki Urasawa interviewed you for his show Manben one of the first things he noticed is that compared to many of your contemporaries you actually draw quite slowly and meticulously. Considering that approach to your craft paired with your significant publication schedule, what’s your workload like and how do you manage it? engaging enough, and has some very interesting ideas. Fans of cosmic horror will be pleased by the concepts presented. The story in typical Ito fashion, also includes some fantastic body horror. Unfortunately for my tastes, too much was left unexplained. It's all quite cool but some further delving into the concepts on display would have absolutely elevated the story.

Interrupted Suicide: Invoked. The teahouse owners and staff keep an eye on people in the town with the suicide bugs, noting any that stand over the cliff. If someone is there too long, they take them to the inn and treat them to tea.

Interest Stacks

Eldritch Abomination: A horrifying entity is glimpsed in a vision right before the town at the base of the mountain is destroyed. It's actually the cult leader Kagero Aido himself after he ascended to become some sort of dark deity. A lot of it was so absurd, it was almost like a South Park parody. The unkillable cult leader who uses meditation as if it were like NORAD’s DEFCON countdown, the insane plan to crash cars into every traffic mirror in the country, covering them with the angel hairs, to create a spy network for… reasons?? One scene involves giant brains crushing everyone that looked so silly, it was like the giant foot coming down at the end of the Monty Python opener! Hazra, Adriana (November 29, 2021). "Daruchan, Ship of Theseus, 4 More Manga Nominated for Best Comic at Angoulême 2022". Anime News Network . Retrieved December 22, 2021.

Decoy Protagonist: Kyoko Byakuya is the point-of-view character for the first chapter, but after her changes from the amagami, she becomes more of a driving figure in other people's lives, with Wataro Tsuchiyado becoming the point-of-view character as he tries to investigate her story. Because generally Ito’s stories branch off into strange, unexpected directions - except they’re usually more interesting than this. Kyoko Byakuya, the mysterious girl, wasn’t an interesting figure - like all the characters, she’s one-dimensional and dull - and the volcano-centric stories did nothing for me. Not these strands of lava that are dubbed “angel hairs”, or what happened to early Christians in the past, or the bizarre suicide bugs digression - none of it.Much like Ito's other manga, the story isn't the tightest. This manga in particular, feels almost like a collection of short stories with a small thread connecting them together. With that said, these short stories are rather engaging and up there for me with some of my favorite Ito short stories. The connecting thread between the short stories is Junji Ito: "And from there Sensor discusses suicidal bugs that carry the souls of the remorseful dead, stalkers, cults, and time-travelling Jesus in Japan. All this and more is awaiting the reader in the collected series SENSOR!"

Mateo, Alex (October 14, 2021). "My Hero Academia Ranks #1 on U.S. Monthly Bookscan September List". Anime News Network . Retrieved December 22, 2021. Gone Horribly Right: The followers in Aido's second cult are given visions of the universe of the kind they desire, but their minds utterly break under the revelation and reduce them to madness.Commonality Connection: Dr. Kurodera agreed to treat Kyoko on seeing that she had the same amigami hair as natives in his village. His son also started bonding with her while performing hypnotherapy.

So then maybe. . . this is angel hair? But the nature of angel hair is still a mystery. Some people say it's spider silk or that it comes from UFOs.'' Humans Are Flawed: Unlike most of Ito's works, Sensor takes this approach. We see a wide range of people, from the kind search and rescue workers that get Kyoko to a hospital after finding her to the cult leader Kagero Aido, and those in the middle like Rie who is kind to strangers. So, this story starts with a young woman, Kyoko Byakuya, feeling drawn to this mountain, Mount Sengoku. Road trip. Arriving at the mountain, she meets a man who has been waiting for her. What? Yeah, the Amagami (angel-hair like cooled lava strands) told him she was coming and she's supposed to bring happiness. Uh huh okay. He leads her (hello? stranger danger!) to his village, Kiyumaki, which lies at the foot of the mountain. It's a very Junji Ito plot: A young woman arrives at a remote mountain village, and the inhabitants tell her they are waiting for her. They are all telepathically linked by strands of golden hair fibres from the local volcano. When she survives a volcanic eruption that destroys the whole village, her hair becomes suffused with the golden thread. That sets off a series of escalating horrors as she wanders the countryside in a daze as her telepathic powers become the focus of a cosmic death cult that worships the dark forces out to destroy the world. A hapless reporter searches for her, hoping to find out exactly what's going on, and even that doesn't help. Akashic records, disfigurement, cosmic horror, and body horror ensue as the woman becomes a symbol of purity and salvation that people want to save or destroy.Despite having all the usual features of a Junji Ito book - weird horror, weirder women, body horror, and some bonkers imagery only Ito could draw - Sensor is the least interested I’ve been reading any of his work.
