Bowhill People's Burns Club
BOWHILL PEOPLE'S BURNS CLUB
The stated aim of the club is "to perpetuate the memory of Burns, to foster the study of his works, and to promote social and intellectual discourse among the members by meetings and discussions".
A feature of the club is its regular monthly meetings, when the singing and reciting of the Bard's work by the members has always been a key element.
In the 1970s the club ceased to be entirely local and now has members from further afield including Burntisland, Cambridge, Cowdenbeath, Crossgates, Cupar, Dundee, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glenrothes, Kelty, Kennoway, Kirkcaldy, Kinglassie, Kinghorn, Leslie, Lochgelly, Pitlochry and London
The club members continue to perform annually at the Club's popular Burns Suppers which are recorded and produced in DVD format for sale to members and friends. These give the club a record of past members and are eagerly snapped up as soon as they become available.
There are currently almost 100 members with up to 20 regular performers who between them can perform over 60 items. They do not, however, rest upon their laurels but are always willing to face the challenge of learning yet another item to add to their repertoires.
At the Annual General Meeting in the Bowhill Hotel, the club's 70th Anniversary Year of 2010/11 was reviewed and hailed as another success in the life of the club. Kevin Thompson( FSA Scot ) was confirmed as Club President for the ensuing year and Club Officials and Committee Members were appointed. Membership continues to grow and the depth of talent within the Club was again evident in the review of the performances at this year's Burns Supper held back in January.
The Club will welcome as new members anyone who has an interest in the works of Robert Burns and if they are not too confident of performing they will receive every encouragement from the present membership to do so at the monthly meetings.
The Annual membership subscription is an easily affordable £5 payable at the Annual General Meeting in April.
