The facilities you provide have a major impact on the types of guests your hotel attracts. Each facility attracts a certain type of client, but might convince others to stay well away. Are you thinking about creating a health and wellness resort? Gym and spa facilities will go a long way to attract health-conscious holidaymakers.

Hotel Tycoon, first published as Hotels, is a Monopoly-like game in which hotel tycoons try to buy and build the best hotels in the world and compete for guests. The game caters two to four players, ages eight and up.

Players must be creative, think strategically, and make wise investment decisions which is a great way to brush up on skills in an engaging manner.

If the player cannot afford to stay at the hotel they must put their own properties up for auction to raise money. A player who loses all of their money and properties is out of the game. The last player remaining is the winner. The third unique mechanic in Hotels comes from how rents are handled. The main difference in rents comes from players having to roll the die to determine how many days they stay in the hotel. In Monopoly you just pay a set amount based on how many houses/hotel are on the property. In addition to being able to upgrade your hotel, Hotels makes players roll the die to determine how much they pay. This roll is key as the difference between a one and six night stay can be huge for some of the properties. If a player keeps rolling high numbers they are going to have a hard time winning the game. You must immediately pay off as much of your debts you are able, even if it bankrupts you and therefore puts you out of the game.

Cars may not share spaces: if you land on an opponent's car, move ahead to the next free space. This not apply to the starting tile, Car Park, when one or more opponents are parked. The more Victory Points that you collect throughout the game, the higher chance you have of becoming a successful Hotel Tycoon! Ultimately, it is those with good judgement in investments and clever promotional skills that will be victorious! Winning Tactics How do you build hotels then? Well, spread out on the board are various money suitcases or the ‘buying space’, when you land on one of these you have the opportunity to buy any of the hotels adjacent to that space – including ones other players might already own if they haven’t built on it yet. I had one cruelly stolen from me during my game.

Setup

The crux of the game works in a very similar manner to Monopoly – work your way around the board collect money and build hotels as you go. Obtain planning permissions using the special dice, and put up first the main building, than any other upgrade Once a player has at least one building on a property they may add entrances to their hotels. One entrance can be placed on each square of the board. If a player lands on an entrance for a hotel belonging to another player they must pay the owner to stay at that hotel. The cost of staying depends on the number of buildings and facilities in the property.
