About this deal

The grid is overlaid with circles, triangles and the like, and where these things cross over is where I place the major figures. You turn and look at the land around you, and you begin to see the faces in the trees and faeries flitting through the shadows. But he's about to learn that Amos was no mere mortician: he was the Undertaker of Lichport, charged with bringing The Peace to the dead trapped in the Shadowlands and Mist Homes, those states of limbo binding spirits to earth.

This early work was published in Once Upon a Time and The Land of Froud, both from David Larkin's Peacock Press. Its a good laugh for people who are even remotely interested in any of the 'fairy-kin' or for people who just like unusual books. By day, he is professor of English at Central Michigan University, teaching courses in mythology, folklore, American Indian studies, and medieval literature, as well as sitting on the board of directors of the Mythic Imagination Institute. This volume tells the story a Victorian young lady who "presses" fairies between book pages, much as her compatriots pressed and collected flowers.Brian Froud's illustrations are both mysterious and ethereal, guaranteed to enthral and amuse all who set eyes upon its pages.

Brian's faeries and magical vision of the world so impressed the American filmmaker Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets) that he asked Brian to come to New York to design two feature films: The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. The authors must have had quite as much fun creating it as I did reading it, as it is filled with a wonderful polyglot of sketches and scribbled notes and warnings. The Froud family's thatch-roof farmhouse sits buried in ivy down a quiet country lane in England's West Country. that infest our refrigerators, our pets, the spaces between our sofa cushions and in fact, our very lives. What, I ask, is the most difficult thing about rendering his vision of the world and its magical spirit in paint?

A fascinating compendium investigating the undersea world of the merfolk exploring: oceanic magic, merfolk language and customs, underwater villages, historical evidence of merfolk and their unfortunate capture, maps of the oceanic zones and their various inhabitants, perilous creatures of the sea and how to avoid them, and remarkable revelations about merfolk/human relations.

The best answer I can give is that I don't have much of a choice in whether I believe in them or not, for they seem to insist on my painting them. Faeries, goblins, trolls and sprites stare down from Brian's paintings on the walls, and cavort in the shape of magical dolls and sculptures created by Wendy. You even get pages which seam to have been mistakes in the printing process, like a couple of pages are upside down. Like Faeries, the films were ground-breaking -- pioneering new puppet design and performance techniques. Goblins' is a fun, funny, smelly, sticky guide, reproducing pages of the ancient and odoriferous Codex Goblinensis; including a first-ever Field Guide that will help identify the various types of goblins; a gazetteer of photos of goblins taken with the arcane, and highly temperamental, Goblin Camera; and a section that helps you know if you've 'got goblins' and what to do about it. Lessons include translating and reading runes, skaldic speaking, calendar customs, and safely traversing the nine worlds while avoiding trolls, dragons, and giants! When he left collage, Brian spent five years in London working in the field of commercial illustration, but he continued to paint mythic images and to develop a distinctive style of his own.

Now we're beginning to recognize how important it is to have a vibrant relationship with the land beneath our feet.Inspired by the woods and hedgerows of Devon, and the ancient, myth-steeped landscape of the moor, the two collaborated on Faeries, an illustrated book of British faery lore.
