About this deal

For all that the book aims to show us ordinary people playing at being superheroes, the violence is often stylized and exaggerated to the point where any sense of reality is washed away.

Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. Even Patience herself, despite her obvious struggles as a single mother with few job prospects, is never as sympathetic as she should be.

Rather, the focus here is on character development: Millar is able to make readers fear for her very quickly, which is not a small feat for someone portrayed as such a powerful and capable soldier. Hopefully the next few issues the book will slow down a little bit and be allowed more room to breathe. I think it might be a new inker responsible for the cleaner images, but, honestly, no one actually notices the 'tracer' (don't hate me inkers, it's a Chasing Amy joke), so it might just be a different style for a different book by JRJr. There is one particular bit when Patience’s husband is introduced that is so precise, with his personality revealed on the twitch of a smirk, that one cannot avoid but to congratulate the artist.

For longtime followers of Romita’s art, what is most noticeable is how the artist improved on his facial expressions. Designing a suit for himself and taking the name "Kick-Ass," Dave decides to make his dreary existence more exciting - and maybe even help some people in the process. Reddit and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a better experience. Patience is forced to take on dead end jobs to try and make ends meet, but when waitressing doesn’t cover the bills, she turns to ripping off the local criminals that are ruining her neighbourhood dressed as Kick-Ass. I tired quickly of the several swooping Phoenix visuals, designed to convey the immense scope of its power, but that's really more of a failing of the script than Romita's storytelling.

Seeing Romita restrain himself to a grittier, more low-key setting often feels like a square peg being shoved into a round hole. This new iteration of the “Kick-Ass” mythos seems to double-down on that recipe, as this inaugural issue has a lot going on for it, from an interesting lead character, relevant topics to discuss and some of the best John Romita Jr. While he co-created Kick-Ass, I've always questioned whether Romita was the right artist to bring this sort of story to life . Does the change on scenario, lead and themes drive readers away from “Kick-Ass”, or was it just what was needed to reinvigorate the franchise? While not exploring unfamiliar territory, Millar, Romita, and team deliver a very strong issue, where script and art come together to tell an interesting story with even better characters. I found it pretty unique and loved the scene int he warehouse with Big Daddy taking out all the bads.

The script loses little time in over-explaining why Patience chose to dress like Kick-Ass in particular: it simply assumes that that iconography is part of her world’s zeitgeist, aligned with past volumes of the series. He fills the book with swearing and graphic violence, which is probably enough to get his fans on his side, even though he is portraying comics fans in general in a pretty harsh light.Though the comic can't be the same as the movie, which I loved watching, it was missing a key piece. I find the new direction, new characters and new setting to be a refreshing shift in the Kick-Ass saga. KICK-ASS IS BACK-ready to wipe out the city’s criminal lowlives, destroy its gangs, and save its communities from decay. While one of the more recognizable Millarworld properties, Kick-Ass has never really lived up to its potential as a story exploring what happens when ordinary people attempt to become costumed vigilantes. Overall, as impressive as it looked, I cant shake the feeling that this was another story first and a Kick-Ass continuation second.
